6 February 2026 - Charlize Theron took the stage in her capacity as a Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Messenger of Peace at the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. In a powerful speech, Theron echoed the spirit of the Olympic Truce Resolution adopted by Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Member States for the 2026 Games, bringing forward a message of peace. Quoting her countryman Nelson Mandela, Theron reminded the audience that ¡°Peace is not just the absence of conflict. Peace is the creation of an environment where all can flourish, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, class, caste, or any other social markers of difference.¡±
She added, ¡°today, this message seems more relevant than ever. So let these Games be more than just sport. Let them be a reminder of our common humanity, our respect for one another, and a resounding call for peace everywhere.¡±
Magnifying this message of peace, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF Goodwill Ambassador Pita Taufatofua, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO Goodwill Ambassador Eliud Kipchoge, and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Global Peace Advocate Maryam Bukhar Hassan participated in the Ceremony as Flagbearers. Globally renowned pianist and Messenger of Peace Lang Lang performed the Olympic Anthem, reinforcing the event¡¯s commitment to unity and safe participation for athletes worldwide.
