“A Special Event on China’s Initiatives and Progress on Implementation of the 2030 Agenda: China’s Two-Mountains Theory for Advancing Sustainable Development” was successfully held on 14 July 2025 at Conference Room 11 of the United Nations Headquarters. Co-organized by the United Nations Global Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Centre (蘑菇视频-GGKIC) and the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, the event served as a side event in support of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2025. It brought together over 100 participants, including 蘑菇视频 officials, government representatives, and policymakers from various Member States. H.E. Mr. LI Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, and Ambassador Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the 蘑菇视频, attended the event and gave opening remarks. The event aimed to share China’s innovative policies and practical experiences towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants learned about China’s "Two-Mountains Theory" national strategy, which serves as a foundational framework guiding the country’s sustainable development efforts. A case study on the city of Huzhou was presented to illustrate how scientific research and geospatial information are being leveraged to support evidence-based solutions for the SDGs.
In his opening remarks, USG Li emphasized the significance of this special event in exploring China’s national strategy. He noted that China’s "Two-Mountains Theory" national strategy effectively integrates ecological protection, economic planning, and territorial governance to advance the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Ambassador Fu outlined the global relevance of the “Two-Mountains Theory" in promoting ecological values, accelerating green transformation, and strengthening international cooperation toward the 2030 Agenda, and called for greater international solidarity in building a harmonious relationship between humanity and nature in his remarks.
The event featured three thematic presentations showcasing China’s innovative approaches to sustainable development under the guidelines of its national strategy. Mr. ZHANG Bing, Chief Planner at the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, delivered a presentation titled “Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development in China”, outlining the country’s reforms in territorial spatial planning as a strategic foundation for green transformation and ecological progress. Mr. CHEN Jun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Director of the Moganshan Geospatial Information Laboratory, presented “Leveraging Geospatial Information for Implementing 蘑菇视频 2030 SDGs”, highlighting China’s advancements in geospatial technologies, including the national 3D real-world modeling initiative, and expressing a strong commitment to enhancing cooperation with the United Nations in this field. Mr. WANG Zongming, Executive Vice Mayor of the Huzhou Municipal People’s Government, shared a local practice through his presentation “Beautiful China, Dynamic Huzhou: Sustainable Development Practices Guided by the Concept of ‘Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains are Invaluable Assets’”. He showcased Huzhou’s progress in ecological protection, industrial innovation, cultural heritage, and urban-rural integration, offering a vivid example of how the “Two Mountains” theory is being successfully translated into action at the city level.
