Mr Mogens Lykketoft,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>President of the 70<sup>th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>19 May 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56760\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/70\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/05\/IMG_2618.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56760\" class=\"wp-image-56760 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/70\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/05\/IMG_2618-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9OPGA\/Christensen\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-56760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9OPGA\/Christensen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly and a politician for almost 50 years, I have spent a lot of the time diagnosing problems and identifying solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But to drive true transformation, you first need a vision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So today, I want to share with you my vision for the type of world we can create for every woman and every girl by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It will be a world where ideally we no longer need to call for gender equality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A world where a young woman in a village in Djibouti has the same opportunities as a young woman in a city in Denmark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Where no girl grows up in extreme poverty or suffers from malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Where health clinics are well equipped to protect mother and baby alike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Where women and girls have the rights and the options to control and protect their own bodies \u2013 their sexual and reproductive health and rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It will be a world where norms, policies and attitudes have changed such that unpaid care and house work is both valued and shared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Where every household is powered by renewable energy so that every girl can do her homework, unhealthy cook-stoves are no more, and our environment flourishes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Where schools represent a safe environment for girls to learn in; with class sizes that give everyone a chance and a curricula that responds to our 21<sup>st<\/sup> century world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">And lastly, it will be a world where justice and equality reign \u2013 where gender-based violence and discrimination is no longer tolerated; where women get equal pay for equal work; where their property rights are fully respected and where every step of the ladder in government and business alike, is fully accessible to them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ladies and gentlemen, such a world is not a utopia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It is sketched out in the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It is the world that 193 world leaders committed to bring about last September.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">And it is within our grasp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">We have the resources and the know-how to make this happen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But we have to start now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">And we have to find the leaders in government, civil society, the private sector to be the change we need to see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly, I will continue to play my part.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For example, I will do all I can to ensure that when you look to the United Nations, you don\u2019t just see an Organization that supports gender equality; you see an organization that embodies gender equality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">And what better way to do that than to break one of the most unacceptable glass ceilings in our world today; to secure, by the end of 2016, the first ever female Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary-General.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">What a way to finish the first year of the SDGs; what a way to demonstrate that our shared vision will become a reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Thank you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><div class=\"woo-sc-divider\"><\/div><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Statement at Women Deliver Conference by H.E.
