Peace and Security<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n


\n\"Portrait:<\/a>Oyama Mgobozi is a senior adviser for peace and security within the Office of the President of the 71st<\/sup> Session of the United Nations General Assembly. He leads on peacekeeping operations, conflict prevention and Middle East Issues: Syria. In his portfolio, he also supports the leads\u00a0on\u00a0peacebuilding and sustaining peace, Palestine, decolonialization issue, African group outreach – with focus on South, Central and East Africa, NEPAD and SADC and NAM outreach.<\/p>\n

Oyama began his career in the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa in 2009 where he worked on Peace and Security issues as well as was part of the team, which was involved in the preparation and the coordination of the South African delegation\u2019s participation at the High Level Segment of the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n

From 2011-2012, Oyama served as part of South Africa\u2019s United Nations Security Council team in Pretoria during the country\u2019s tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. He was in charge of reviewing the Secretary General\u2019s reports on various Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Security Council issues and contributing to South African statements and inputs to draft resolutions on the different areas of responsibility.<\/p>\n

Oyama\u00a0served at the South African Embassy in Libya from 2012-2014. He was responsible for political, social and economic bilateral relations with the new Libyan Government through the sharing of South African experience of its transitional experience and the promotion of the country\u2019s foreign policy. During his time in Libya, Oyama\u00a0participated in meetings and workshops with both international and local stakeholders to address pertinent issues such as Border Security, Human Rights, Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) and Gender Empowerment.<\/p>\n

From 2014 until currently, he has been working in the South African Permanent Mission to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in New York and covers developments in the Fourth Committee and the Security Council, with the specific focus on Decolonization issues and issues related to the Middle East specifically the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Peacebuilding and Mediation.<\/p>\n
