Over 400 participants gathered in Washington DC today to attend the three-day Leadership Summit and be updated on current Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ issues, exchange views, and meet with high-ranking U.S. Government and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ officials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In his address, President Thomson stressed the abiding relationship between the US and the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, pointing to the special status of the US as a founding member of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, a strong protector of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter, a permanent member of the Security Council, and the host of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">He said the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, founded from the \u201cuntold sorrows\u201d of World War Two, was created to take us towards a world of tolerance; a world in which we live together in peace, respecting our obligations arising from international treaties and international law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">President Thomson praised the work of the United Nations Association of the USA, saying it had a proud history of promoting the high ideals for which the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ stands. He said the Association\u2019s chapters had, \u201cserved as faithful advocates of the fundamental truth that the United Nations represents great value for the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Acknowledging that the performance of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ has had its imperfections over the years, the President said, \u201cthe balance of good done by our organization far outweighs the negative,\u201d and that it was \u201cdifficult to imagine effective world governance without the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.\u201d\u00a0 He told the Association that Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary-General Guterres was dedicated to the task of revitalizing and reforming the United Nations to make it more responsive to the needs of those the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ serves, particularly in the fields of conflict prevention and the sustaining of peace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Following his keynote address, the President participated in a robust question and answer session alongside Kathy Calvin, CEO and President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Foundation, covering such topics as international migration, peace and security, the Sustainable Development Goals, climate change, and last week\u2019s conclusions from The Ocean Conference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President delivers Keynote Address at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Association of USA 2017 Leadership Summit New York,\u00a012\u00a0June 2017,\u00a0The President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly, Peter Thomson, delivered a keynote address this afternoon, 12 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":202,"featured_media":100762,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[165],"tags":[3180,5697,5692,5687],"class_list":["post-100797","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-stories","tag-latest-news","tag-un-association-of-usa","tag-una-usa","tag-washington-dc"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
