{"id":63948,"date":"2016-08-05T12:38:59","date_gmt":"2016-08-05T16:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/?p=63948"},"modified":"2016-09-13T11:45:13","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T15:45:13","slug":"press-release-president-elect-of-the-un-general-assembly-appoints-two-more-senior-officials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/2016\/08\/05\/press-release-president-elect-of-the-un-general-assembly-appoints-two-more-senior-officials\/","title":{"rendered":"PRESS RELEASE: President-elect of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly appoints two more senior officials"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: right\">Press Release<\/h4>\n<h1><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">President-elect of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly appoints two more senior officials<\/h1>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Strong commitment to transparency, gender parity and North-South balance for OPGA71<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵITED NATIONS<\/strong><em>, New York,\u00a05 August\u00a02016<\/em> \u2013 The President-elect of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly, Ambassador Peter Thomson of Fiji, today announced two more key appointments to the Office of the President of the General Assembly for the 71st session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ambassador Sofia Borges, former Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, will become Special Adviser on Strategic Engagement and Transparency and Ambassador Ioannis Vrailas, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, will act as Special Adviser, Political.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIn line with the appointments made earlier this week, today\u2019s appointments reflect my commitment to maintaining gender parity and a healthy North-South balance in the Office of the President,\u201d Mr Thomson said today. \u201cA continuing commitment to transparency will also be a core function during the 71st session.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ambassador Borges will lead work on strategic engagement with Member States and non-state actors and oversee activities within the Office to ensure the maximum level of transparency possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ambassador Borges is currently serving as Special Adviser on the 2030 Agenda to the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵA). Previously she was PR of Timor-Leste to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ from 2010-2016 during which time she served as Chair of the Third Committee for the 69th session of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly and as a Vice President of the 68th Session of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly. She was Lead Negotiator for her country during the Open Working Group on the Sustainable Development Goals and Lead Negotiator for Timor-Leste Post-2015 Inter-Governmental Negotiations on the SDGs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ambassador Vrailas, a career diplomat and foreign affairs expert, will serve as Special Adviser, Political.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Before his current position as Deputy Head of the EU Delegation in New York, which he took up in 2011, Ambassador Vrailas served as Deputy Chief of Mission with the Embassy of Greece in Washington D.C. from 2009 to July 2011.
