The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson, met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland, H.E. Mr. Timo Soini, on 23 September 2016.<\/p>\n

President Thomson and Minister Soini discussed the political and security situation in Europe. They also discussed the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

Minister Soini emphasized the serious effects of climate change in the Arctic region and the mentioned the various activities of the Arctic Council with regard to environment, climate, oceans and indigenous peoples. The upcoming Chairmanship of Finland in the Arctic Council was also discussed.<\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly expressed his hope that the Member States of the Arctic Council would participate actively in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 on conservation and sustainable use of oceans which will be convened in New York in June 2017.<\/p>\n
