Mr. President of the General Assembly,<\/em>
\n Mr. Secretary-General,<\/em>
\n Excellencies,<\/em>
\n Ladies and gentlemen,<\/em>
\nWhen I heard the Security Council’s decision to recommend me to the\u00a0General Assembly, my feelings could be described by just two words:
\ngratitude and humility.<\/p>\n

It is with the same gratitude and humility that I stand before you today,\u00a0now joined by a profound sense of responsibility.
\nI am grateful, first of all, to the General Assembly and the Security Council\u00a0for entrusting me with the position of Secretary-General of the United\u00a0Nations.<\/p>\n

I am also grateful for the transparency and openness of the selection\u00a0process and to the many competent, thoughtful and dedicated candidates\u00a0who came forward. I believe this process means that the true winner\u00a0today is the credibility of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. And it also made very clear to me that,\u00a0as Secretary-General, having been chosen by all Member States, I must be\u00a0at the service of them all equally and with no agenda but the one\u00a0enshrined in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter.<\/p>\n

I am fully aware of the challenges the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ faces and the limitations\u00a0surrounding the Secretary-General. The dramatic problems of today’s
\ncomplex world can only inspire a humble approach – one in which the\u00a0Secretary-General alone neither has all the answers, nor seeks to impose\u00a0his views; one in which the Secretary-General makes his good offices\u00a0available, working as a convener, a mediator, a bridge-builder and an\u00a0honest broker to help find solutions that benefit everyone involved.<\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/em>
\n Ladies and gentlemen,<\/em>
\nOver the last 10 years, I have witnessed, first hand, the suffering of the\u00a0most vulnerable people on earth. I have visited war zones and refugee\u00a0camps where one might legitimately ask: what has happened to the\u00a0“dignity and worth of the human person”?
\nWhat has made us immune to the plight of those most socially and\u00a0economically underprivileged? All this makes me feel the acute
\nresponsibility to make human dignity the core of my work- and I trust,\u00a0the core of our common work.
\nThis also underscores the importance of gender equality. I have long been\u00a0aware of the hurdles women face in society, in the family and in the\u00a0workplace just because of their gender. I have witnessed the violence they\u00a0are subject to during conflict, or while fleeing it, just because they are\u00a0women. I have tried to address this through every public office I have ever\u00a0held. The protection and the empowerment of women and girls will\u00a0continue to be a priority commitment for me.<\/p>\n

I have faith in the United Nations because I believe in the universal values\u00a0its stands for: peace, justice, human dignity, tolerance and solidarity.\u00a0Based on these values, I believe that diversity in all its forms is a\u00a0tremendous asset, and not a threat; that in societies that are more and\u00a0more multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious, diversity can bring us\u00a0together, not drive us apart.<\/p>\n

\n Mesdames et Messieurs,<\/em>
\nSans paix, la vie est vid\u00e9e de tout son sens. Sans paix, on ne peut garantir\u00a0le d\u00e9veloppement durable et le respect des Droits de l’Homme, qui soustendent\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0leur tour l’enracinement de la paix. Mais la paix est aujourd’hui\u00a0et malheureusement la grande absente dans notre monde.<\/p>\n

De par sa vocation mondiale et les principes consacr\u00e9s dans sa Charte,\u00a0I’Organisation des Nations Unies a le devoir moral et le droit universel de\u00a0mettre en oeuvre comme priorit\u00e9 majeure la diplomatie pour la paix. Une\u00a0diplomatie capable de faire valoir la diversit\u00e9 et le caract\u00e8re repr\u00e9sentatif\u00a0de I’ONU. Une diplomatie qui lui permette de s’\u00e9riger en forum de\u00a0dialogue, en espace public universel pour apprendre \u00e0 travailler ensemble,\u00a0pour mieux nous connaitre et mieux \u00e9couter I’autre. Une diplomatie\u00a0capable d’apaiser les tensions et de faire \u00e9merger des solutions pacifiques\u00a0aux conflits qui emp\u00e9chent tant d’\u00e9tres humains d’avoir une vie digne de\u00a0ce nom.
\nQuand j’\u00e9tudiais I’Histoire au lyc\u00e9e, et ce avec passion, presque toutes les\u00a0guerres se terminaient avec des vainqueurs. Mais les conflits actuels ne\u00a0connaissent que des perdants. Les guerres semblent interminables,\u00a0deviennent de plus en plus complexes et entreli\u00e9es, et alimentent la haine\u00a0et le terrorisme. En m\u00eame temps, la souffrance qu’elles causent devient\u00a0moralement insupportable et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 est partout menac\u00e9e. II est de\u00a0notre responsabilit\u00e9\u00a0collective de mettre fin \u00e0 cet \u00e9tat des choses.
\nJe suis bien conscient qu’il y a parmi nous des visions diff\u00e9rentes et des\u00a0int\u00e9r\u00eats l\u00e9gitimes parfois divergents, qui cr\u00e9ent des divisions et rendent\u00a0difficile l’unit\u00e9 de notre action pour la paix. Mais les menaces qui p\u00e8sent\u00a0sur notre s\u00e9curit\u00e9 collective, sur la nature m\u00eame de nos soci\u00e9t\u00e9s et la\u00a0survie de la plan\u00ffte telle que nous la connaissons sont telles que notre\u00a0int\u00e9r\u00eat commun doit s’imposer contre tout ce qui nous divise. Unissonsnous\u00a0pour la paix – voil\u00e0 la demande la plus pressante des citoyens du\u00a0monde que nous sommes I\u00e0 pour servir.<\/p>\n

\nAllow me, before finishing, to salute the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. I\u00a0had the honour of working with you, Sir, throughout many years and\u00a0witnessed your unfailing dedication to the cause of international public\u00a0service. I will do my utmost to honour your legacy.<\/p>\n

I also want to express my admiration for the dedication and commitment\u00a0of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ staff. Having been myself a staff member for more than a\u00a0decade, I am thrilled with the prospect of becoming a colleague once\u00a0again.
