Mr Peter Thomson,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>President of the 71<sup>st<\/sup> Session of the General Assembly, at\u00a0<\/strong><strong>United Nations Staff Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>25\u00a0October 2016<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2016\/10\/img_4268-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-78388\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2016\/10\/img_4268-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2016\/10\/img_4268-1.jpg 374w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2016\/10\/img_4268-1-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2016\/10\/img_4268-1-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>Secretary-General,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Excellencies,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Distinguished guests,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ colleagues,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ladies and gentlemen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I am delighted to be here to celebrate Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Staff Day, and to have the opportunity to express thanks to the nearly 76,000 women and men who are currently serving in the United Nations system. It is an appreciation that I know is shared by all the members of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Former Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskj\u00f6ld, once said <em>\u201cThe health and strength of a community depends on every citizen\u2019s feeling of solidarity with the other citizens, and on their willingness, in the name of this solidarity, to shoulder their part of the burdens and responsibilities of the community. The same is of course true of humanity as a whole.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Across our world, United Nations\u2019 staff members are <u>working every day<\/u> at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters, duty stations, and field missions, to give life to the purposes and principles of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter, \u201cto shoulder their parts of the communal burden\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Whether serving as a child protection adviser in a war zone, or a truck driver on a humanitarian mission; whether a peace and development specialist building partnerships, or a human resources officer making sure colleagues are supported in the field; every Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ staff member rises each day to contribute to a purpose greater than themselves \u2013 that of service to the international community.<\/p>\n<p>Across <u>peace and security, development, and human rights<\/u>, the responsibilities invested in the United Nations by the international community are immense. And it is Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ staff members who are the engine that drives the work to fulfil these responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ must uphold standards of professionalism and dedication to the principles of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter. I urge all staff members to work to secure the integrity of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in all aspects of their daily work.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ladies and gentlemen,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We remember and honour this day the more than 3,500 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ personnel who have <u>lost their lives<\/u> in service to the high-ideals of this institution, over the course of the 71 years of its history. Their memories and their sacrifice live as long as the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ stands.<\/p>\n<p>We also remember this day the more than 107,000 <u>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ peacekeepers<\/u> currently deployed in the trouble spots of the world. We give thanks to those Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ staff members who are <u>serving in the field<\/u> under challenging and often dangerous circumstances, away from loved ones and the comforts of home.<\/p>\n<p>Their willingness to risk safety, to take the blue flag of hope to people in need, brings great pride to their own nations and to the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>But it is also one that brings with it a heavy burden shared by both the deployed officers and their families. I therefore also want to recognise and <u>thank the family members<\/u> of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Staff for their sacrifice and support.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ladies and gentleman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ours is an Organization built upon shared purpose and common values, and I encourage you all to take the opportunity of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Staff Day to reflect on both your individual and collective worth in the service of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your service; thank you for choosing the United Nations and the betterment of people and planet as your vocation; thank you for your collegiality; and may you succeed in all your goals and efforts in the year ahead.<\/p>\n<p>I thank you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Opening Remarks\u00a0by H.E.
