Mr. Peter Thomson,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>President of the 71<sup>st<\/sup> Session of the General Assembly on the occasion\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>60<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of Japan\u2019s Membership\u00a0<\/strong><strong>to the United Nations<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>19 December 2016<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n<p>Greetings from New York,<\/p>\n<p>It is my pleasure to address you as we celebrate the 60<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Japan\u2019s membership of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>I am sorry not to be able to join you in Tokyo to mark this milestone.<\/p>\n<p>Since Japan joined the United Nations family in 1956, its contribution to the international community has been significant \u2013 covering all three pillars of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s work across peace and security, human rights, and development.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s resolute commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts, to disarmament and non-proliferation, to gender equality and human rights, and to enhancing the efficiency of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system, has seen it forge a reputation as a reliable friend and partner to the United Nations system, and influential contributor to global affairs.<\/p>\n<p>For the last 30 years, Japan has been the second largest contributor to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ regular budget. And it is about to complete a highly-successful term as a non-permanent member of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Security Council \u2013 the only country in the world to have served 11 times in this role.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s commitment to championing disaster risk reduction led to the adoption last year of the Sendai Framework \u2013 an historic achievement for sustainable development, risk reduction, and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>As the world\u2019s attention now shifts to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Sendai Framework, and other recent agreements that together comprise a universal masterplan for people, planet and prosperity, we count on the continued drive, innovation, and engagement of countries like Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Together, with your support, we can transform our world for ourselves, our children, our grandchildren, and all future generations.<\/p>\n<p>So \u2018doumo arigatou gozaimasu\u2019, and congratulations once again to Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Video Message by H.E.
