Peter Thomson, and the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for the Office of Central Support Services, Mr. Stephen Cutts, on behalf of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretariat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">By installing the electric chargers, the United Nations seeks to incentivize Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Permanent Missions, its car-driving delegates and staff to increase the number of zero-emission miles driven to commute and improve local air quality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The installation of electric vehicle charging stations, fuelled by low-carbon energy, supports a growing market share of the automobile market &#8212; at 33% per year &#8212; and encourages drivers to adopt clean transportation options. Studies reveal that employees are up to 20 times more likely to buy a plug-in car if their employer offers at-work charging.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The new chargers are powered by low-carbon energy and are in line with the United Nations\u2019 commitment to sustainable development and in particular to Sustainable Development Goal 11 on sustainable transportation and cleaner urban air quality. The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretariat-led initiative also reinforces the importance of clean energy technologies and infrastructure, key to reaching Sustainable Development Goal 7, which aims to accelerate the transition to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for all. Reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy intensity are also essential to reaching long-term climate goals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8220;Achieving Sustainable Development Goals on sustainable transportation, clean urban air, and affordable, clean energy is central to the transformation of the global energy system. Local communities should get on board, thereby improving the daily lives of people affected by pollution. The inauguration of these electric vehicle chargers at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ is a small but important step in the right direction. Acts like these can have positive multiplier effects in our quest to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. I hope the day is imminent when the whole of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ vehicle fleet is powered by clean, electric energy&#8221;, President Thomson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assistant Secretary-General Cutts added: &#8220;I am delighted that the Secretariat has installed these Electric Vehicle Charging Stations. Not only are these an additional amenity for our clients, but they also symbolise the United Nations&#8217; commitment to &#8220;greening&#8221; initiatives and to promoting sustainable practices wherever we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The installed chargers at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHQ in NY are compatible with all electrical\/hybrid plug-in vehicles and also with the HQ\u2019s electrical voltage.
