Mr. Peter Thomson,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>on the occasion of election of the President of the 72nd Session of the General Assembly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>31 May 2017<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2017\/05\/DBKVrPaXYAEqk4c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-99115 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2017\/05\/DBKVrPaXYAEqk4c-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"PGA 72 election\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2017\/05\/DBKVrPaXYAEqk4c-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2017\/05\/DBKVrPaXYAEqk4c-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2017\/05\/DBKVrPaXYAEqk4c-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2017\/05\/DBKVrPaXYAEqk4c-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2017\/05\/DBKVrPaXYAEqk4c.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I would like to extend my most sincere congratulations to His Excellency Mr. Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia, on his election by acclamation as the President of the 72<sup>nd<\/sup> session of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As a three-term Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, having served the United Nations and the European Union in a number of senior conflict prevention, resolution, and mediation roles, and having worked previously as a career diplomat, Minister Laj\u010d\u00e1k brings a\u00a0dedicated work ethic, an unwavering commitment to multilaterialism, and a wealth of experience to the role.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Without doubt, these are skills that will serve him, and the United Nations, well over the coming session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Minister Laj\u010d\u00e1k will assume the Presidency of the General Assembly on 12 September at a\u00a0critical time for the United Nations and the international community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">With the world facing global challenges on a massive scale, including cycles of conflict and relapse; the largest refugee and humanitarian crisis since World War II; the spread of terrorism and the destructive impacts of climate change, the General Assembly has a critical role to play in\u00a0 setting the stage for achieving sustainable peace and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In recent times, I have had the honour of meeting Minister Laj\u010d\u00e1k on several occasions, and have been struck by his commitment to forging a United Nations fit for the 21st Century, an organisation that serves the people, one that is based on ethics and transparency, and one that promotes human rights and the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I am confident that under Minister Laj\u010d\u00e1k\u2019s leadership, the United Nations will be strongly positioned to advance our global efforts to sustain peace; promote human rights; and stay the course on implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In the months ahead, I will continue the close collaboration already begun with Minister Laj\u010d\u00e1k and his team, to ensure continuity in the work of the General Assembly and its subsidiary committees. I\u00a0am confident we will achieve a smooth transition between our presidencies, and that his team will hit the ground running.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Excellencies, <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The General Assembly has today elected a dedicated and able President for its 72<sup>nd<\/sup> Session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I congratulate Minister Laj\u010d\u00e1k on his election, and wish him the very best for the session ahead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remarks by the President of the General Assembly,\u00a0H.E.
