{"id":74648,"date":"2016-09-28T12:04:11","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T16:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=74648"},"modified":"2016-09-28T12:04:11","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T16:04:11","slug":"international-day-of-non-violence","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/event2\/international-day-of-non-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"International Day of Non-Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>2 October 2016<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/nonviolenceday\/images\/nonviolence.jpg\" alt=\"photo of a sculpture of a gun with the barrel twisted into a knot\" \/>The International Day of Non-Violence is marked on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to General Assembly resolution<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ga\/search\/view_doc.asp?symbol=A\/RES\/61\/271\">A\/RES\/61\/271<\/a> of 15 June 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day is an occasion to &#8220;disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness&#8221;. The resolution reaffirms &#8220;the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence&#8221; and the desire &#8220;to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Introducing the resolution in the General Assembly on behalf of 140 co-sponsors, India\u2019s Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. Anand Sharma, said that the wide and diverse sponsorship of the resolution was a reflection of the universal respect for Mahatma Gandhi and of the enduring relevance of his philosophy. Quoting the late leader\u2019s own words, he said: &#8220;Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind.
