Mr Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k, was designated as an International Gender Champion by the Permanent Representatives of Panama and Switzerland on behalf of the leadership network, International Gender Champions\u00a0New York.<\/p>\n<p>Reaffirming his commitment to advance gender equality during the 72<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0session of the General Assembly, President Laj\u010d\u00e1k said: \u201cWe need the collective efforts of leaders to harness the full potential of women as agents of change. As decision-makers, it is our responsibility to lead by example in breaking down gender barriers and ensuring equal opportunities for women at all levels within our own organization. I will do my part in raising awareness among Member States about this crucial issue as President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Laj\u010d\u00e1k announced the following two concrete commitments, in addition to the <a href=\"http:\/\/genderchampions.com\/panel-parity\">Panel Parity Pledge<\/a>, which is at the core of the Gender Champions initiative:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The President will maintain gender parity within his own office, including at senior levels. Currently 70% of the President\u2019s team are women, and there is gender parity at the senior level.<\/li>\n<li>The President will strive towards gender parity in the selection of co-chairs, moderators and cofacilitators of various General Assembly high-level meetings and processes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>International Gender Champions\u00a0(ICG)\u00a0is a network of senior leaders of the United Nations Secretariat, funds, programmes and agencies; Member States; local governments; private sector leaders; and civil society. It strives to achieve gender equality by breaking down gender barriers in a very practical way. The New York chapter of the ICG, which originally started in Geneva, was launched on 20 March\u00a02017. Mr. Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k, today concluded a two-day visit to New Delhi. While in the Indian capital, he met with H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India; H.E. Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Minister for External Affairs of the Republic of India; H.E. Mr. M.J. Akbar, Minister of State for External Affairs of the Republic of India; and the United Nations Country Team in India, headed by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mr. Yuri Afanasiev.<\/strong><\/p><p>At the invitation of Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, President of the Governing Body and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Research and Information Systems for Developing Countries (RIS), the President-elect also met with a group of experts on the United Nations to exchange views on the overall work of the Organization and possibilities for its further improvement.<\/p><p>During his meeting with the Prime Minister, the President-elect outlined his priorities for the upcoming General Assembly session, including improving the lives of all people, preventing conflict, sustaining peace, addressing migration, advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, tackling climate change and promoting human rights. He thanked the Prime Minister for India\u2019s contribution to his office\u2019s trust fund and added, \u201cI have always believed in the United Nations. And I am counting on India\u2019s continued support to ensure that the Organization remains relevant and capable of helping the world to find solutions to current challenges.\u201d The two also discussed the fight against terrorism, poverty and youth radicalization, as well as the role of regional organizations in the international system.<\/p><p>Upon meeting the Minister for External Affairs, the President-elect thanked her for inviting him to visit India. Their talks then focused on Security Council reform, revitalization of the General Assembly, terrorism, the Sustainable Development Goals, migration, climate change, investing in youth and sustaining peace. On human rights in general, the President-elect stressed that the international agenda must remain overarching and non-politicised, especially since human rights violations were often the first indicator of impending conflict.<\/p><p>The President-elect was accompanied to India by his Chief of Staff, H.E.
