MUST DO MORE TO PROMOTE NON-VIOLENCE, PRESIDENT SAYS U.N. MUST DO MORE TO PROMOTE NON-VIOLENCE, PRESIDENT SAYS<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>This morning the President of the General Assembly delivered remarks to an event to mark the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/2017\/10\/02\/international-day-of-non-violence\/\"> International Day of Non-Violence<\/a>. He said the real difference between violence and non-violence is that one inspires fear and the other positive action. This action is what is needed for transformative change.\u00a0\u00b7 He added, \u201cAs a global leader in non-violence, the United Nations needs to do more to promote this principle, and to inspire others to do so too.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>HIGH-LEVEL HUMAN TRAFFICKING EVENT WRAPS UP<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Today was the last day of the High-level meeting of the General Assembly on the appraisal of the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. Overall, the meeting heard statements from 98 Member States \u2013 including 10 Ministers and 7 Vice Ministers. Six observers also spoke.\u00b7 In his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/2017\/10\/02\/combat-trafficking-in-persons\/\">concluding remarks<\/a>, the President said, \u201cÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ was created for people, not for governments\u201d, adding that we cannot let down the millions of people trafficked around the world for billions of dollars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>PRESIDENT TO DISCUSS FINANCING OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS<\/h3>\n<p>Today the President is meeting with Mark Thornton, the CEO of the non-profit, Business for the Planet.\u00a0\u00b7 They will be discussing ways to finance the implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/?menu=1300\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>MILITARY SPENDING SURGES WHILE MILLIONS GO HÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵGRY, DISARMAMENT COMMITTEE TOLD<\/h3>\n<p>This morning the President <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/2017\/10\/02\/first-committee\/\">addressed<\/a> the General Assembly\u2019s First Committee, which handles disarmament and international security. The First Committee started its general debate today.\u00b7 The President noted that global military spending grew to nearly 1.7 trillion dollars in 2016 \u2013 while millions still live in extreme poverty and go hungry. He called on Member States to summon the political will to do more.
