30 May 2018<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image _builder_version=”3.0.87″ show_in_lightbox=”off” url_new_window=”off” use_overlay=”off” sticky=”off” align=”left” always_center_on_mobile=”on” border_style=”solid” force_fullwidth=”off” src=”https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/05\/DSC01224-Copy.jpg” show_bottom_space=”on” \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.87″ background_layout=”light” border_style=”solid” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” background_size=”initial”]<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Good morning, excellencies, colleagues, dear young participants,<\/em><\/p>\n Welcome to the United Nations; welcome to our Youth Dialogue.<\/p>\n We are very excited to have you here, because we – my team and I – are very excited about this event.<\/p>\n We want this Youth Dialogue to be different from any other meetings that are taking place in the United Nations.<\/p>\n We don\u2019t want this to be an event when we talk about<\/em> young people; we don\u2019t even want this to be an event when we talk to<\/em> young people.<\/p>\n We want this to be an event when we take a step back, and we listen to young people, talking to each other.<\/p>\n And we want to get inspired \u2013 and to follow your lead and your advice.<\/p>\n So, even though I am technically the boss here, right now I understand that I am standing on your<\/em> stage.<\/p>\n And I will get out of your way, as fast as I can.<\/p>\n But first I would like to make two points, to open our discussion today.<\/p>\n And point number one is: why do we need this dialogue?<\/p>\n And the answer is very simple: we need it because the United Nations is here for<\/em> people \u2013 and the United Nations is about<\/em> people.<\/p>\n If the United Nations is to meet the goals set for itself in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter, it needs to engage with people; it needs to bring people inside of this building; it needs to talk to people, and reach out to people.<\/p>\n And, not just some<\/em> people \u2013 not just people of a certain profession, certain rank, or certain age.<\/p>\n But all people \u2013 in particular, young people.<\/p>\n And, it makes sense, because there are more young people on this planet than ever before. And young people are better educated than ever before. And they have better means of communication and interaction than ever before.<\/p>\n And I am not saying that the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ is not engaging with young people. There are<\/em> many forums, many interactions and many dialogues.<\/p>\n But, at the same time, I also have my personal experience \u2013 from travelling to many countries and meeting with many young leaders and young activists. And I heard from many of them that they still feel that they are excluded from decisions that are affecting their lives; that they are not invited to the table as they are supposed to be. And way too often they have the feeling that, when they speak, no one is listening.<\/p>\n I am not na\u00efve; I know that we are not going to change that with this one event.<\/p>\n But I hope there will be many more. And I also hope that we will have follow-up to this discussion outside of these walls \u2013 outside of the United Nations.<\/p>\n So, let\u2019s use this platform; let\u2019s make sure it\u2019s interesting and it\u2019s useful for each and every one of you.<\/p>\n My second point is about the themes – the topics – of today\u2019s discussion.<\/p>\n We want to focus on three in particular.<\/p>\n The first one is education.<\/p>\n And, speaking about education, it\u2019s not about numbers, it\u2019s rather about access<\/em> to education; it\u2019s about quality <\/em>of education.<\/p>\n And, we want to hear from you. What is your experience?<\/p>\n How well did schools prepare you for the challenges of today \u2013 and even more, for the challenges of tomorrow?<\/p>\n What is your piece of advice?<\/p>\n How can we best deliver on SDG4, on education?<\/p>\n The second issue we want to discuss today is employment.<\/p>\n Everybody understands that the prospective to get a decent job is one of the most important things in people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n And here again, we want to hear about your<\/em> experience.<\/p>\n How is it, when you cannot get the job \u2013 or when you cannot get the job you want<\/em>?<\/p>\n What about people who do get the job, but they still live in poverty?<\/p>\n And what about young women on the job market?<\/p>\n What should we do better, to improve prospects for people \u2013for young people \u2013 to get better jobs in their lives?<\/p>\n And the third issue is a very complex one: radicalization and the risk of extremism.<\/p>\n We talk about it, but we still don\u2019t really get it \u2013 don\u2019t really grasp it.<\/p>\n Because it\u2019s so complex – but probably also because we don\u2019t talk enough to the people who have been affected by this.<\/p>\n And we know that the motivations are different.<\/p>\n There are some people who were introduced to radical movements by friends. But there are some others who were actively searching on the internet about the ways to get there.<\/p>\n There are some people who are unemployed and frustrated. But there are also some people with good education and excellent jobs.<\/p>\n So, there are no simple answers; there are no simple solutions.<\/p>\n But we would like to get your advice on how to deal with this phenomenon.
