{"id":162832,"date":"2018-06-26T15:39:19","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T19:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/?p=162832"},"modified":"2018-06-26T15:39:19","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T19:39:19","slug":"highlights-of-press-briefing-by-spokesperson-26-june-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/2018\/06\/26\/highlights-of-press-briefing-by-spokesperson-26-june-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Highlights of press briefing by spokesperson \u2013 26 June 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h1><strong>HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESS BRIEFING BY BRENDEN VARMA,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR <\/strong><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY <\/strong><strong>PRESIDENT <\/strong><strong>MIROSLAV LAJ\u010c\u00c1K <\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"post-meta vcard\">\n<p><strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span class=\"updated\">26 June 2018<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>ASSEMBLY ADOPTS RESOLUTION ON COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵTER-TERRORISM STRATEGY REVIEW<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The General Assembly plenary is meeting today for its sixth review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/counterterrorism\/ctitf\/en\/un-global-counter-terrorism-strategy\">Strategy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>It started today\u2019s meeting by adopting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/06\/PGA-Letter-6th-review-Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵCT.pdf\">resolution<\/a> by consensus entitled: \u201cÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy Review\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>A debate is now underway.<\/li>\n<li>In his <a href=\"\/pga\/72?p=162775\">remarks<\/a> this morning, the President said, \u201cNo one country can ever be immune to terrorism\u2013 and no one country can ever hold all of the answers \u2013 which is why international cooperation is vital.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>He added, \u201cWe will be stronger if we work together. And this Strategy gives us an opportunity to do so.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>He also said, \u201cWe cannot afford to underestimate the threat facing us\u2026 We need to pool our capacities and experiences\u2026 And we need to deliver a strong message: that we do not &#8211; will not &#8211; accept international terrorism.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The Spokesperson was asked who exactly the President was addressing when he said we \u201cwill not accept international terrorism.\u201d The Spokesperson replied that the President\u2019s message was for all people throughout the world.<\/li>\n<li>The Spokesperson said the President felt that no person should ever have to be the victim of terrorism. The General Assembly also stood strongly against terrorism, which is why it had adopted the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.<\/li>\n<li>Asked whether terrorists would listen to the President\u2019s words about terrorism, the Spokesperson said the President hoped that the world was listening. That is why he was delivering his message in the most democratic body of the United Nations.<\/li>\n<li>In response to further questions, the Spokesperson reminded journalists that it was the General Assembly that had approved the creation of the United Nations Office\u00a0of\u00a0Counter-Terrorism. In that regard, terrorism was a subject that was taken very seriously by the General Assembly and its President.<\/li>\n<li>Asked about the practical implications of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the Spokesperson urged the reporter to read through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/counterterrorism\/ctitf\/en\/un-global-counter-terrorism-strategy\">strategy<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/06\/PGA-Letter-6th-review-Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵCT.pdf\">resolution<\/a> that had been adopted by consensus today.<\/li>\n<li>Replying to additional questions, the Spokesperson said the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/counterterrorism\/ctitf\/en\/un-global-counter-terrorism-strategy\">Strategy<\/a> had been adopted by the General Assembly in 2006 and was a unique\u00a0global\u00a0instrument to enhance national, regional and international efforts to counter terrorism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>COOPERATION NEEDED TO FIGHT GLOBAL DRUGS PROBLEM<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The President delivered <a href=\"\/pga\/72?p=162793\">remarks<\/a> at today\u2019s launch of this year\u2019s World Drug Report.<\/li>\n<li>He said, \u201cWe do have a global drugs problem. No country is immune from it. But that does not mean that all countries have the same experience\u2026 So national solutions and policies are crucial.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>He added, \u201cBut the only way to make them stronger \u2013 the only way we can ensure long-term success \u2013 is through cooperation. Both regionally and internationally.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>PRESIDENT MEETS WITH ANGOLAN &amp; CHINESE AMBASSADORS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Asked why the President was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\/status\/1011681074592800769\">meeting today<\/a> with the Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations, the Spokesperson said the Angolan ambassador had recently arrived at the United Nations.
