Mr. Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k, President of the 72<sup>nd<\/sup> Session of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly, at\u00a0<b>Presentation of Gender Champions Annual Report 2017<\/b><\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I welcome the presentation of the annual report of the International Gender Champions network.<\/div>\n<div>Let me also thank Ambassador J\u00fcrg Lauber and Under-Secretary-General Beagle for their leadership and commitment.<\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">Women\u2019s empowerment and gender equality are a big part of the United Nations\u2019 work on the ground.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">Without equal opportunities for women within the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system, we cannot achieve goals across any of its three pillars.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">We have seen a lot of progress. For the first time, gender parity has been achieved at the senior leadership in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">But, if we want to keep up the momentum\u2013 if we want a gender equal Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ at all levels\u2013 leaders must play an even bigger role.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">As President of the General Assembly, I made gender equality an overarching priority. I\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">ensured a gender-balanced team within my own Office from day one. Actually, 70% of my\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">staff are women with gender parity at senior levels as well.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">I also committed to greater gender parity throughout the work of the General Assembly.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">As a result, I managed to achieve gender balance in the selection of co-chairs and co-facilitators in the Assembly\u2019s various processes. Out of 38 co-chairs and co-facilitators appointed during my Presidency, 20 are men and 18 are women.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">And all General Assembly events and high-level meetings organized under my Presidency included gender-balanced panels.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">Thanks to the collective efforts of the Gender Champions, we can say that s<\/span>ingle-sex panels are no longer acceptable in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">Over the past year, I also learnt about the challenges that women continue to face in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">I dedicated my first morning dialogue\u00a0<\/span>with Permanent Representatives to the issue of gender mainstreaming and have learnt first-hand about the challenges women delegates face in their daily work at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">Only 20% of Permanent Representatives in New York are women.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">And Member States continue to nominate male candidates for leadership positions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">And so, the numbers are not promising.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">During this General Assembly session, all 6 Chairs of the Main Committees were men. And\u00a0<\/span>only 5 out of the 21 Vice-Presidents are currently women.<\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">Only one woman has ever served as Chair of the First Committee and\u00a0two for the Fifth Committee.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-GB\">During the upcoming session, one woman will serve as Chair of a Main Committee\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8211; the Permanent Representative of Australia as Chair of Fifth Committee.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Member States have a key role in promoting the participation of women in the General Assembly\u2019s work.<\/div>\n<div>There are many opportunities for them to do so.<\/div>\n<div>The resolution on the revitalization of the General Assembly already includes provisions on this topic. Now it is time to implement them.<\/div>\n<div>For example, Member States may consider applying voluntary quotas to their own delegations.<\/div>\n<div>They may also consider presenting more women candidates for leadership positions in the General Assembly.<\/div>\n<div>Finally, they could also put more emphasis on work-life balance measures to overcome challenges that hinder women\u2019s participation in important Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ meetings.<\/div>\n<div>I am confident this Network will play a crucial role on the road to a more gender equal Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;3.6&#8243; author=&#8221;MIROSLAV LAJ\u010c\u00c1K&#8221; portrait_url=&#8221;http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2017\/08\/PGA72-small.jpg&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; job_title=&#8221;President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly&#8221; quote_icon_background_color=&#8221;#f5f5f5&#8243; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00aff8\">Women\u2019s empowerment and gender equality are a big part of United Nations\u2019 work on the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.6&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div>To conclude: there has been great progress.
