Statement by H.E. Mr. Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k, President of the 72nd<\/sup> Session of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly, at\u00a0Nelson Mandela International Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mr. Secretary-General, Madam Minister, Excellencies, Dear Colleagues and Friends, <\/em><\/p>\n

We are here to celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela.<\/p>\n

And I want to start by being very frank.<\/p>\n

Unlike others in the room, I did not know Mr. Mandela personally.<\/p>\n

So, I will not attempt to give you my own impression of him \u2013 or talk about his personal attributes.<\/p>\n

Instead, I want to reflect on some lessons from his life.<\/p>\n

They are lessons which, I think, we could all stand to learn from.<\/p>\n

But they are particularly crucial for those of us who work and serve under the United Nations\u2019 blue flag.<\/p>\n

The first is about dialogue.<\/p>\n

Nelson Mandela taught us that dialogue is one of the most powerful tools available to humanity.<\/p>\n

He knew that conflict and violence drag us back. But that talking can drive us forward.<\/p>\n

And he showed us that dialogue and negotiation should be pursued relentlessly \u2013 no matter how deep the divides, or strong the hurt.<\/p>\n

This Organisation \u2013 the United Nations – was established as a global hub for dialogue.<\/p>\n

It was designed to give all nations in the world a place to talk about their differences \u2013 instead of bringing them to the battlefield.<\/p>\n

The General Assembly now includes 193 Member States.<\/p>\n

In it, even countries with vastly different positions or interests can sit together – sometimes side by side.<\/p>\n

So, when we use this forum\u2026 to talk to\u2026 to engage with\u2026 to listen to\u2026 and to learn from each other \u2013 including<\/em> those we disagree with – we are honouring Nelson Mandela\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n

The second lesson is about peace.<\/p>\n

Nelson Mandela understood that peace is not, simply, the absence of conflict.<\/p>\n

He knew that it must be something deeper. It must be a culture. And it must live in<\/em> people \u2013 not, just, in their actions.<\/p>\n

And I believe President Mandela was one of the first world leaders to really draw our attention to the root causes of conflict and instability.<\/p>\n

Even after being elected South Africa\u2019s first black president \u2013and averting civil conflict – he refused to take peace for granted.<\/p>\n

He dedicated himself to the eradication of poverty. He put a huge amount of time and effort into opening up South Africa\u2019s education system. He worked to make national institutions more representative. And he prioritised reconciliation among his people.<\/p>\n

Nelson Mandela described peace as \u201cmore precious than diamonds or silver or gold\u201d.<\/p>\n

So, it is clear he understood its value. And that everything must be done, to keep it alive, when there is still time.<\/p>\n

And I think that is a major lesson to remind ourselves of today.<\/p>\n

Too often we have let peace slip through our fingers. And we have waited until it was gone, to act.<\/p>\n

Now we are moving towards a more proactive, preventive model \u2013 which prioritises investment in peace, rather than responding to its loss.<\/p>\n

I saw huge support for these efforts, when world leaders came here, to talk about Sustaining Peace, in April.<\/p>\n

And, as we continue this work, Nelson Mandela can inspire us all.<\/p>\n

The third and final lesson today is about tolerance.<\/p>\n

When President Mandela addressed the United Nations for the first time, he reminded his audience why this Organisation was created:<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ was born out of the titanic struggle against Nazism and fascism, with their pernicious doctrines and practices of racial superiority and genocide\u201d.<\/p>\n

And he went on to dedicate his life to making sure these phenomena could not take root, again.<\/p>\n

He stood up against injustice, oppression and racism.<\/p>\n

And he took every opportunity he had, to remind us all of our own humanity.<\/p>\n

I think Archbishop Desmond Tutu was right on the mark, when he described Nelson Mandela as the \u201cThe Prophet of Tolerance\u201d.<\/p>\n

The prophet is no longer with us.<\/p>\n

But his teachings are<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And we need them – now, more than ever.<\/p>\n

All over the world, we are seeing worrying rises in the trends that Nelson Mandela fought against.<\/p>\n

Intolerance.<\/p>\n

Hate.<\/p>\n

Inhumanity.<\/p>\n

Racism.<\/p>\n

Prejudice.<\/p>\n

Discrimination.<\/p>\n

We cannot be silent in the face of them.<\/p>\n

We need to push back harder \u2013 and to speak out louder – than ever.<\/p>\n

\u2026In his country.<\/p>\n

\u2026In his people.<\/p>\n

\u2026In the future of Africa.<\/p>\n

\u2026And, in humanity.<\/p>\n

We need to celebrate his legacy.<\/p>\n

Not just through this event today.<\/p>\n

But also through our everyday lives.<\/p>\n

Whether that means our work for the United Nations, our role within our communities, or the way we see and treat the people around us.<\/p>\n

Let us pay tribute, to him, through our own humanity.<\/p>\n
