{"id":164943,"date":"2018-08-15T22:50:03","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T02:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/?p=164943"},"modified":"2018-08-15T22:50:03","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T02:50:03","slug":"highlights-of-press-briefing-by-spokesperson-15-august-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/2018\/08\/15\/highlights-of-press-briefing-by-spokesperson-15-august-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Highlights of press briefing by spokesperson \u2013 15 August 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h1><strong>HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESS BRIEFING BY BRENDEN VARMA,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR <\/strong><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY <\/strong><strong>PRESIDENT <\/strong><strong>MIROSLAV LAJ\u010c\u00c1K <\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"post-meta vcard\">\n<p><strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span class=\"updated\">15 August 2018<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>AFGHANISTAN: TERROR ATTACK ON YOÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵG STUDENTS \u201cÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵACCEPTABLE\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>On Afghanistan, the President <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\/status\/1029748839207579649\">said it was unacceptable<\/a> that a suicide bomber killed almost 50 people in Kabul today.<\/li>\n<li>He noted that many of the victims were young people preparing for university entrance exams.<\/li>\n<li>He said, \u201cPursuing an education should not be a risk to one\u2019s life.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>He added that the General Assembly continues to stand against terrorism and with Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>PRESIDENT MEETS WITH TURKISH LEADERS IN ANKARA<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The President <a href=\"\/pga\/72?p=164913\">was in Turkey<\/a> on Monday.<\/li>\n<li>In Ankara, he <a href=\"\/pga\/72?p=164871\">delivered remarks<\/a> to the tenth annual Turkish Ambassadors\u2019 Conference. He spoke about current priorities on the international agenda \u2013 including migration, peace, sustainable development and people \u2013 as well as United Nations reform and multilateralism. He also flagged Turkey\u2019s \u201cvery unique role on the international stage.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>While in Ankara, President Laj\u010d\u00e1k met with H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan, President of Turkey. President Laj\u010d\u00e1k thanked Turkey for its strong support to the United Nations; for its active and visible role in the General Assembly; and for hosting more refugees than any other country. They also discussed regional challenges and how those could be addressed through international cooperation.<\/li>\n<li>The President also met separately with the Turkish Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Mevl\u00fct \u00c7avu\u015fo\u011flu.
