{"id":165720,"date":"2018-09-10T15:50:56","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T19:50:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/?p=165720"},"modified":"2018-09-10T15:50:56","modified_gmt":"2018-09-10T19:50:56","slug":"highlights-of-press-briefing-by-spokesperson-10-september-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/2018\/09\/10\/highlights-of-press-briefing-by-spokesperson-10-september-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESS BRIEFING BY SPOKESPERSON \u2013 10 SEPTEMBER 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.12.2&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h1><strong>HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESS BRIEFING BY BRENDEN VARMA,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR <\/strong><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY <\/strong><strong>PRESIDENT <\/strong><strong>MIROSLAV LAJ\u010c\u00c1K <\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"post-meta vcard\">\n<p><strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span class=\"updated\">10 September 2018<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.12.2&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>MULTILATERALISM MEANS WE CAN ALL WIN, PRESIDENT SAYS AT PEACE EVENT<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The President spoke this morning at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipinst.org\/2018\/09\/broader-perspectives-un-today-tomorrow?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=organic_social&amp;utm_campaign=US_IPI_outreach_events&amp;utm_content=link\">event at the International Peace Institute (IPI)<\/a> \u2013 entitled \u201cBroader Perspectives on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ of Today and Tomorrow.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In his remarks, he said that multilateralism was \u201cunder fire.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>But he added, \u201cAlthough multilateralism does require compromise, it can mean that we all win.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The President was joined by members of his Team of External Advisors, who distributed an independent report containing their thoughts on the current state of multilateralism; peace and conflict prevention; the work of the General Assembly; the Security Council; migration; and financing for development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>ASSEMBLY PLENARY CONSIDERS 3 DRAFT RESOLUTIONS ON AFRICA<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>This afternoon the General Assembly plenary will meet to consider three draft resolutions.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/en\/A\/72\/L.68\">first<\/a> is entitled: \u201cConsolidating gains and accelerating efforts to control and eliminate malaria in developing countries, particularly in Africa, by 2030.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/en\/A\/72\/L.57\/Rev.1\">second<\/a> is: \u201cNew Partnership for Africa\u2019s Development: progress in implementation and international support.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The United States has proposed an <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/en\/A\/72\/L.71\">amendment<\/a> to that annual resolution, which will be considered by the plenary.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/en\/A\/72\/L.59\/Rev.1\">third<\/a> draft is called: \u201cImplementation of the recommendations contained in the report of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Two delegations have proposed amendments to that draft \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/en\/A\/72\/L.72\">United States<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/en\/A\/72\/L.70\">Austria<\/a> on behalf of the European Union. Those draft amendments will also be considered by the plenary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>U.N.
