Address to the Third Committee<\/p><\/div>\n
His Excellency, Mahmoud Saikal, Permanent Representative of Afghanistan and Chairman of the Third Committee,<\/em><\/p>\nExcellencies,<\/em><\/p>\nDistinguished delegates,<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Allow me first to congratulate Ambassador Mahmoud Saikal and the other members of the Bureau on their election to lead the work of this Committee.<\/p>\n
I trust that, with your leadership and dedication, the Third Committee will successfully move forward as you take on the important work on your agenda.<\/p>\n
Since the beginning of my presidency, I have insisted on the importance of making the United Nations more relevant to all people of the world. To achieve this goal, the work of the Third Committee is fundamental.<\/p>\n
Social development, the elimination of racism and racial discrimination and the exercise of the right of people to self-determination are essential for this Organization. Equally important are the rights of the children, indigenous peoples, people of African descent, migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons, the elderly and people with disabilities.<\/p>\n
We must also advance in crime prevention and criminal justice, as in the efforts to overcome the world drug problem .<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Distinguished delegates,<\/em><\/p>\nAt least five of my seven priorities closely correspond to the work of this Committee, namely: gender equality; people with disabilities; migrants and refugees; youth; and decent work. This is why I have great expectations about the results of the deliberations of this Committee.<\/p>\n
As the fourth woman to hold the presidency of the General Assembly, I am committed to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.<\/p>\n
My presidency is dedicated to women who are harassed for the mere fact of occupying political spaces, and to those who demand equity in their workplaces. I want to raise awareness about the women and girls who are victims of violence and who continue to be excluded by the law because of the simple fact of being women.<\/p>\n
To break the cycle of inequality that continues to weigh on half of the world’s population, we need collective efforts. I hope to count on the collaboration of all of you to achieve that common goal during this session.<\/p>\n
For this reason, I am providing all my support to the summit on “Women in power” in March 2019.<\/p>\n

Dear delegates,<\/em><\/p>\nAround one and a half billion people live with some type of disability, most of them living in developing countries.<\/p>\n
This Committee is central to the promotion of the rights of people with disabilities and to ensure their rights to a quality education and their access to decent work. I appeal to you to incorporate these cross-cutting perspectives in your deliberations.<\/p>\n
