She described it as a milestone development.<\/p>\n<p>In her speech to the plenary, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa recalled that the Intergovernmental Conference in Morocco was a clear proof of multilateralism as the most efficient tool to face one of the most important challenges of our times: international migration.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Espinosa noted that today, the 10 December, the world marks Human Rights Day and that the adoption of the Global Compact on this very day was the best tribute to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>After the adoption she granted a Press Conference in Marrakech to talk about the next step, which is the endorsement of the document in the General Assembly, \u00a0scheduled for 19 December.<\/p>\n<p>Miss Espinosa said, and I quote: \u201cWe now have to agree on rules of procedure for the implementation of the Global Compact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PGA\u2019s AGENDA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since arriving in Marrakech for the Conference on International Migration, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa met Heads of State and Government, the President \u00a0met the former President of Liberia and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Ms. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first elected female Head of State in Africa. They talked about encouraging more women to take active part in politics. She had separate meetings with the delegations of Ecuador and Mexico and took part in events and round-tables with the International Labour Organization, ILO, and International Organization for Migration, IOM, where she also talked about the importance of decent work. While in Marrakech she also granted interviews to; Die Welt, the New York Times, RAI TV and the Morocco News Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Today the PGA will take part in celebrations to mark the 70<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>This is all from us. I think we met before or I have already met most of you. But to the ones who don\u2019t know me I am Monica Grayley, the Spokesperson of the President of the General Assembly, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa.<\/p><p>I am very happy to serve in this capacity, and very proud to serve to the Presidency of the first woman from Latin America and the Caribbean to take this post in the History of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, and I look forward to working with you all in the next months.<\/p><p>I would like to take this opportunity, if you allow me, to thank my predecessor and colleague Brenden Varma who did a great job and was very helpful to us during the transition. So many thanks to Brenden.<\/p><p>Somebody asked about my background. You can find us on <a href=\"http:\/\/un.org\/pga\/73\">un.org\/pga\/73<\/a> our Twitter for the PGA President is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA<\/a>.<\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3><strong><u>Agenda of the President of the General Assembly<\/u><\/strong><\/h3><p>Today, the President of the General Assembly, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa, will have a meeting with the President of the Security Council for the month of October, His Excellency, Ambassador <strong>Sacha<\/strong> Sergio <strong>Llorenty<\/strong> Soliz.<\/p><p>She also granted an interview to the Press Trust of India about an hour ago.<\/p><p>Yesterday, President Espinosa had the opportunity to unveil the new stamps for the International Day of Non-Violence.<\/p><p>The three definitive stamps by the United Nations Postal Administration feature the Knotted Gun sculpture, officially known as the Non-Violence Sculpture.<\/p><p>She also took part yesterday in the event held at the ECOSOC chamber on the Day of Non-Violence. In her speech on the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi she said, and I quote: \u201cAs we move into the 73<sup>rd<\/sup> Session, I commit to working with the General Assembly and its related committees in ways that reflect Gandhi\u00b4s view of change: \u2018You must be the change you want to see in the world\u2019.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><h3><strong><u>High-Level Meeting<\/u><\/strong><\/h3><h3><strong><u>Ms. Espinosa presides over the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit<\/u><\/strong><\/h3><p>You will remember that, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa presided over the last High-Level Plenary Meeting of the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit at the GA Hall.<\/p><p>Initially, the event was meant to last a day but due to the high interest it was extended to two days until 1 October, yesterday.<\/p><p>About 150 speakers took the floor to honour the legacy of President Nelson Mandela.<\/p><p>During the opening of the Summit, on 24 September, President Espinosa said that \u201cMandela was always guided by the principles underpinning the United Nations. He represented the values of peace, solidarity, cooperation and respect for all human beings, regardless of their race, political views or religious beliefs.\u201d<\/p><p>You will recall that the GA adopted a strong Political Declaration at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit strengthening the role of the United Nations.<\/p><p>The Declaration also acknowledged Mr. Mandela\u00b4s contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world.<\/p><p>President Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa firmly believes that there is a possibility to defend national interest and sovereignty but at the same time countries can engage in collective action and strengthen multilateralism.<\/p><p>The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA adopted a historic political declaration declaring 2019-2028 as the Nelson Mandela Decade of Peace and calling on world leaders to redouble efforts to pursue international peace and security, development and human rights.<\/p><p>That\u2019s all for me.
