GENDER LEADERS DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF WOMEN\u2019S LEADERSHIP<\/strong><\/p>\n
The President of the General Assembly is hosting a high-level panel discussion today on the future of women\u2019s leadership. Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa is chairing the meeting in partnership with the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Foundation ahead of the event WomenInPower, scheduled for 12 March.<\/p>\n
The panel is composed\u00a0of\u00a0the vice-president of Panama, H.E.\u00a0Isabel de Saint Malo de Alvarado, the current first lady and former Minister of Planning of Angola, H.E.\u00a0 Ana Dias Louren\u00e7o, the President and\u00a0Chief Executive Officer\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Foundation, Ms. Kathy Calvin, supermodel and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova, \u00a0and Al Jazeera presenter,\u00a0Folly Bah Thibault.<\/p>\n
Ms. Espinosa has dedicated her mandate as PGA to women and girls around the world and to women in politics. She believes that an alliance of Member States, public sector and civil society can help to identify barriers to the full and equal participation of women in posts of leadership as well as promote a faster empowerment of women.\u00a0Today, only 10% of Heads of State and Government are female. There are 20 women in such positions and only 24% of women are parliamentarians in the world. The PGA says that women contribute a great deal to\u00a0the\u00a0decision-making processes and must be present at the table.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Other members of the Gender Specialist group, formed by the PGA, are: Helen Clark, former prime-minister of\u00a0 New Zealand, Aurelia Frick, Foreign Minister of Liechtenstein, Isabel Pla, Minister of Women and Gender Equality of Chile, Sri\u00a0Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance of Indonesia\u00a0and\u00a0Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar\u00a0Museums.<\/p>\n
LAÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵCH OF NEGOTIATIONS ON SECURITY COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵCIL REFORM<\/strong><\/p>\n
The PGA spoke earlier today in a meeting to launch the intergovernmental negotiations on the question of equitable representation and increase in the membership of the Security Council and related matters.<\/p>\n
Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa\u00a0says\u00a0that the GA has addressed it for over two decades, and that it is now over 25 years since the Open-Ended Working group to deal with this matter was formed. The PGA said\u00a0today that: \u201cIntergovernmental negotiations began more than a decade ago. And still, the composition of the Security Council continues broadly to reflect the world as it was in 1945, save for the increase in non-permanent seats agreed half a century ago.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The PGA says that she firmly believes in the power of dialogue, and in the ability \u2013 and diplomatic skill \u2013 of Member States to make meaningful progress in the coming months. Ms. Espinosa also thanked the co-facilitators for this process H.E. Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, of the United Arab Emirates, and H.E. Ambassador Christian Braun of Luxembourg.<\/p>\n
PGA\u2019s AGENDA AND OTHER ISSUES<\/strong><\/p>\n
This afternoon, the PGA will receive at her office, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Italy, H.E. Emanuela Del Re.<\/p>\n
Later she will grant an interview to Forbes USA on gender equality and her work with the gender leaders, which was launched today.<\/p>\n
