GA DEBATES INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n
This morning, the President of the General Assembly has delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the High-Level Debate on International Migration and Development. The event is taking place at the ECOSOC Chamber until 6 pm. today.<\/p>\n
The meeting will inform the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, which will review the goals and targets relevant to migration of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, taking into consideration the outcomes of other processes related to international migration and development.<\/p>\n
In her opening remarks, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa highlighted that migration and sustainable development are deeply interconnected and interdependent. She said that the full inclusion of migrants is crucial to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, by 2030.<\/p>\n
The PGA also spoke about the need to discuss human trafficking, and the relation between migration and labour policies. She stresses that women and girls represent 71% of all victims of human trafficking, and that women migrants face the biggest challenges to access health services.<\/p>\n
The President mentioned that migrations contributes to diversity and development.<\/p>\n
Ms. Espinosa also talked about decent work, as one of her seven priorities, and a key element for the successful completion of the Agenda 2030.<\/p>\n
The discussions of the morning and afternoon segments will focus on good practices about including migration in voluntary national reviews at the HLPF, and on how to build capacity and partnerships, mobilize resources and develop processes and policies.<\/p>\n
The High-Level Debate is being attended by the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, IOM, Mr. Ant\u00f3nio Vitorino, the Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, Mr. Shahidul Haque, the Vice-Minister for Human Mobility of Ecuador, Mr. Santiago Javier Chavez Pareja, Ms. Alicia B\u00e1rcena Executive-Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC, and other representatives of the United Nations as well as of civil society.
