{"id":185908,"date":"2019-04-16T14:16:21","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T18:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/?p=185908"},"modified":"2019-04-16T14:18:18","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T18:18:18","slug":"press-briefing-by-spokesperson-16-april-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/2019\/04\/16\/press-briefing-by-spokesperson-16-april-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Briefing by Spokesperson \u2013 16 April 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>PRESS BRIEFING BY MONICA GRAYLEY,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR <\/strong><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY <\/strong><strong>PRESIDENT MAR\u00cdA FERNANDA ESPINOSA<\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"post-meta vcard\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"updated\">16 April 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>[As prepared]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>PRESIDENT ESPINOSA HIGHLIGHTS YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND MULTILATERALISM IN LECTURE AT US Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIVERSITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly has spoken this morning to students at the William Paterson University, in the US state of New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa delivered the Spring 2019 Tinker Lecture on the United Nations in the Age of Nationalism and Making the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Relevant to All.<\/p>\n<p>She spoke to an audience of approximately 150 students and staff members of the Political Science &amp; Latin American and Latino Studies Programme.<\/p>\n<p>The PGA talked about the importance of youth empowerment and its engagement to help solve global challenges such as climate change.<\/p>\n<p>She said that young people have \u201ctremendous power as citizens\u201d and that \u201cgovernments are more likely to support international cooperation and initiatives like the Sustainable Development Goals if they think their voters care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly also mentioned the power young people have as activists either online or in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Espinosa noted that the present young generation is highly educated and creative with a clear understanding of the crucial role which multilateralism plays nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>Following her lecture, the PGA answered questions on nuclear disarmament, peace and security, gender equality, young people and the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, refugees and migrants and the current situation in Venezuela, amongst other topics.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking office Ms. Espinosa has spoken at several universities and interacted directly with students on the priorities of her agenda which include youth, peace and security. This is part of the PGA\u2019s efforts to bring the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ closer to people and people closer to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/p>\n<p>More details on our website: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\">www.un.org\/pga\/73<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SAVE THE DATE: INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE TO COMMEMORATE INTERNATIONAL MOTHER EARTH DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For your diaries: Monday next week, 22 April, the General Assembly will hold an interactive dialogue on Harmony with Nature in Commemoration of the International Mother Earth Day.<\/p>\n<p>The objective of the interactive dialogue is to encourage all countries and relevant stakeholders to further promote the integration of collective climate action in education taking into account innovative paradigms and other steps.\u00a0 The theme is \u201cMother Earth approach in the implementation of Education and Climate Change\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Participants include Member States, United Nations entities, independent experts and other relevant stakeholders.
