Representatives of Indigenous Peoples,<\/p>\n
Excellencies,<\/p>\n
Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/p>\n
I am deeply grateful to the Assembly of First Nations, and the Permanent Missions of Canada and Ecuador, Australia and Norway, for organizing this important event on: achieving the promise<\/u> of the International Year of Indigenous Languages.<\/p>\n
As a poet and long-time advocate for the rights of Indigenous Peoples, I am delighted to deliver keynote remarks this afternoon.<\/p>\n
Dear friends: \u201cLanguage is inseparable from our way of being, our thoughts, our feelings, our joys … It is through our language that we show who we are. If our language disappears, the whole socio-cultural foundation of our community is put at risk.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nThese powerful words by Maria Virginia Haoa, writing about the Rapa Nui language, capture the importance of language to identity and wellbeing, and<\/u> to the history and future of societies.<\/p>\n
This relationship is particularly intense for indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n
Indigenous languages are rich and evolving repositories of knowledge and culture \u2013 passed on through generations; preserving values, customs, narratives and histories; and defining relationships, not just within communities but with the world outside.<\/p>\n
For indigenous peoples, language is intertwined with survival.\u00a0The Cordillera in the Philippines have developed a vocabulary to reflect their processes for cultivating rice. And this knowledge is of great significance to all of humanity.<\/p>\n

Los Pueblos ind\u00edgenas mantienen cerca del 18% de la diversidad planetaria, y 85% de las \u00e1reas protegidas en el mundo. La importancia de su sabidur\u00eda se refleja en el Acuerdo Clim\u00e1tico de Par\u00eds.<\/p>\n
La preservaci\u00f3n de las lenguas ind\u00edgenas es clave para lograr los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.<\/p>\n

Dear friends,<\/p>\n
In many indigenous communities, detailed knowledge of ecosystems is embedded in their vocabulary. Rural communities in India are using knowledge and practices developed centuries ago to conserve thousands of varieties of rice for example. And there are similar gains to be made across the 2030 Agenda, from indigenous use of medicinal plants to indigenous approaches to peace and reconciliation.<\/p>\n
It is therefore extremely concerning that indigenous languages are disappearing.<\/p>\n
An estimated forty percent of the 6,700 languages spoken in the world are under threat. Most are indigenous. If we were talking about a species of animal, we would be sounding the alarm about extinction.<\/p>\n
Their loss, the loss of indigenous languages, would be a tragic blow for humanity \u2013 and for the planet. For indigenous peoples themselves \u2013 who have endured so-called \u201cre-education\u201d programmes, who have been dispossessed and slaughtered \u2013 loss of language is a fundamental human rights issue.<\/p>\n
Language is the basis of identity. It is what makes us human; what makes us, us<\/u>. It is essential to freedom of thought, opinion and expression; to the exercise of economic, social and cultural rights.<\/p>\n
I am often reminded of a poem by Mikeas Sanchez, who writes in Zoque \u2013 and I quote:<\/p>\n
\u201cMy grandmother never learned Spanish,<\/em><\/p>\nwas afraid of forgetting her gods,<\/em><\/p>\nwas afraid of waking up in the morning.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nChers amis.<\/p>\n
Les menaces pesant sur les langues des Peuples Autochtones font partie des probl\u00e8mes des droits humains auxquels ils sont confront\u00e9s : marginalisation, discrimination, racisme, assimilation culturelle, effacement de l\u2019identit\u00e9 – colonisation par d\u2019autres moyens.<\/p>\n
Je suis d\u2019ailleurs tr\u00e8s consciente du fait que je m’adresse \u00e0 vous aujourd’hui en anglais, en fran\u00e7ais et en espagnol.<\/p>\n
C\u2019est pourquoi l\u2019ann\u00e9e internationale des langues autochtones – et les mesures visant \u00e0 prot\u00e9ger et \u00e0 autonomiser les peuples autochtones – devrait \u00eatre replac\u00e9e dans un contexte beaucoup plus large, \u00e0 savoir :<\/p>\n
– r\u00e9alisation du programme 2030,<\/p>\n
– mise en \u0153uvre de l’accord de Paris sur le climat,<\/p>\n
– la d\u00e9fense des droits humains et<\/p>\n
– continuer \u00e0 faire face aux effets du colonialisme.<\/p>\n
Dear friends,<\/p>\n
As we hold meetings this year on climate change, on sustainable development, on financing for development, on the culture of peace \u2013 let us ensure that: indigenous issues are prominent; indigenous peoples are present; and indigenous voices are heard.<\/p>\n
This side event is about outcomes and future steps. Indigenous peoples are already involved in a host of initiatives to protect their languages and knowledge \u2013 from the Indian rice databases I referred to earlier, to ongoing action to prevent indigenous intellectual property from being mis-appropriated.<\/p>\n
Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO in the lead, has also developed several platforms to strengthen the interface between science and indigenous knowledge; and to encourage creative use of digital technologies \u2013 to capture indigenous languages and encourage the next generation to speak them.<\/p>\n
The Yuelu proclamation includes recommendations for actions by Member States \u2013 such as language institutions and legal protections, which could include support to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It also recommends the adoption of an International Decade of indigenous languages \u2013 to reflect the need for sustained efforts in this regard.<\/p>\n
Dear friends,<\/p>\n
We all need to work together to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples \u2013 who have struggled so long for their voices to be heard, including in this building. I hope you will attend the hearing I am convening on Thursday on the participation of indigenous peoples in the work of the United Nations.<\/p>\n
And we all need to work together to preserve indigenous languages. Indeed, we would be foolish not to do so, given the crucial knowledge embedded in them.<\/p>\n
So I wish you every success in your discussions today, and I encourage you all to remain actively engaged with this issue beyond this International Year.<\/p>\n
I would like to end with a quote about the Lakota language:<\/p>\n
\u201cOur language comes from the song of our heartbeat. It is not something that can quickly be put into words. It is a feeling, a prayer, a thought, an emotion \u2013 all of these things are in the language.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nThank you.<\/p>\n

Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/p>\n
I am deeply grateful to the Assembly of First Nations, and the Permanent Missions of Canada and Ecuador, Australia and Norway, for organizing this important event on: achieving the promise<\/u> of the International Year of Indigenous Languages.<\/p>\n
As a poet and long-time advocate for the rights of Indigenous Peoples, I am delighted to deliver keynote remarks this afternoon.<\/p>\n
Dear friends: \u201cLanguage is inseparable from our way of being, our thoughts, our feelings, our joys … It is through our language that we show who we are. If our language disappears, the whole socio-cultural foundation of our community is put at risk.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n These powerful words by Maria Virginia Haoa, writing about the Rapa Nui language, capture the importance of language to identity and wellbeing, and<\/u> to the history and future of societies.<\/p>\n This relationship is particularly intense for indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n Indigenous languages are rich and evolving repositories of knowledge and culture \u2013 passed on through generations; preserving values, customs, narratives and histories; and defining relationships, not just within communities but with the world outside.<\/p>\n For indigenous peoples, language is intertwined with survival.\u00a0The Cordillera in the Philippines have developed a vocabulary to reflect their processes for cultivating rice. And this knowledge is of great significance to all of humanity.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.7″]<\/p>\n Se\u00f1oras y Se\u00f1ores,<\/p>\n Los Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas sufren en todo el mundo, desproporcionadamente, los efectos del Cambio Clim\u00e1tico. Pero no solo son v\u00edctimas, tambi\u00e9n son defensores medioambientales.<\/p>\n Los Pueblos ind\u00edgenas mantienen cerca del 18% de la diversidad planetaria, y 85% de las \u00e1reas protegidas en el mundo. It is what makes us human; what makes us, us<\/u>. It is essential to freedom of thought, opinion and expression; to the exercise of economic, social and cultural rights.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.7″ border_style=”solid” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” background_size=”initial”]<\/p>\n Dear friends,<\/p>\n In many indigenous communities, detailed knowledge of ecosystems is embedded in their vocabulary. Rural communities in India are using knowledge and practices developed centuries ago to conserve thousands of varieties of rice for example. And there are similar gains to be made across the 2030 Agenda, from indigenous use of medicinal plants to indigenous approaches to peace and reconciliation.<\/p>\n It is therefore extremely concerning that indigenous languages are disappearing.<\/p>\n An estimated forty percent of the 6,700 languages spoken in the world are under threat. Most are indigenous. If we were talking about a species of animal, we would be sounding the alarm about extinction.<\/p>\n Their loss, the loss of indigenous languages, would be a tragic blow for humanity \u2013 and for the planet. For indigenous peoples themselves \u2013 who have endured so-called \u201cre-education\u201d programmes, who have been dispossessed and slaughtered \u2013 loss of language is a fundamental human rights issue.<\/p>\n Language is the basis of identity. It is what makes us human; what makes us, us<\/u>. It is essential to freedom of thought, opinion and expression; to the exercise of economic, social and cultural rights.<\/p>\n I am often reminded of a poem by Mikeas Sanchez, who writes in Zoque \u2013 and I quote:<\/p>\n \u201cMy grandmother never learned Spanish,<\/em><\/p>\n was afraid of forgetting her gods,<\/em><\/p>\n was afraid of waking up in the morning.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Chers amis.<\/p>\n Les menaces pesant sur les langues des Peuples Autochtones font partie des probl\u00e8mes des droits humains auxquels ils sont confront\u00e9s : marginalisation, discrimination, racisme, assimilation culturelle, effacement de l\u2019identit\u00e9 – colonisation par d\u2019autres moyens.<\/p>\n Je suis d\u2019ailleurs tr\u00e8s consciente du fait que je m’adresse \u00e0 vous aujourd’hui en anglais, en fran\u00e7ais et en espagnol.<\/p>\n C\u2019est pourquoi l\u2019ann\u00e9e internationale des langues autochtones – et les mesures visant \u00e0 prot\u00e9ger et \u00e0 autonomiser les peuples autochtones – devrait \u00eatre replac\u00e9e dans un contexte beaucoup plus large, \u00e0 savoir :<\/p>\n – r\u00e9alisation du programme 2030,<\/p>\n – mise en \u0153uvre de l’accord de Paris sur le climat,<\/p>\n – la d\u00e9fense des droits humains et<\/p>\n – continuer \u00e0 faire face aux effets du colonialisme.<\/p>\n Dear friends,<\/p>\n As we hold meetings this year on climate change, on sustainable development, on financing for development, on the culture of peace \u2013 let us ensure that: indigenous issues are prominent; indigenous peoples are present; and indigenous voices are heard.<\/p>\n This side event is about outcomes and future steps. Indigenous peoples are already involved in a host of initiatives to protect their languages and knowledge \u2013 from the Indian rice databases I referred to earlier, to ongoing action to prevent indigenous intellectual property from being mis-appropriated.<\/p>\n Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO in the lead, has also developed several platforms to strengthen the interface between science and indigenous knowledge; and to encourage creative use of digital technologies \u2013 to capture indigenous languages and encourage the next generation to speak them.<\/p>\n The Yuelu proclamation includes recommendations for actions by Member States \u2013 such as language institutions and legal protections, which could include support to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It also recommends the adoption of an International Decade of indigenous languages \u2013 to reflect the need for sustained efforts in this regard.<\/p>\n Dear friends,<\/p>\n We all need to work together to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples \u2013 who have struggled so long for their voices to be heard, including in this building. I hope you will attend the hearing I am convening on Thursday on the participation of indigenous peoples in the work of the United Nations.<\/p>\n And we all need to work together to preserve indigenous languages. Indeed, we would be foolish not to do so, given the crucial knowledge embedded in them.<\/p>\n So I wish you every success in your discussions today, and I encourage you all to remain actively engaged with this issue beyond this International Year.<\/p>\n I would like to end with a quote about the Lakota language:<\/p>\n \u201cOur language comes from the song of our heartbeat. It is not something that can quickly be put into words.
