MULTILATERALISM REINFORCES SOVEREIGNTY, PGA SAYS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The General Assembly is\u00a0today\u00a0hosting the High-Level Meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.<\/p>\n

In her remarks, the President of the General Assembly explained that multilateralism in the only way possible to solve global challenges.<\/p>\n

Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda\u00a0Espinosa also stressed the importance\u00a0of\u00a0dispelling\u00a0myths such that;\u00a0multilateralism leads to less sovereignty\u00a0for\u00a0national States. She said\u00a0that the opposite is the case: multilateralism instead reinforces sovereignty.<\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly recalled that in September, most of the world leaders who spoke at the General Debate clearly expressed their support\u00a0for\u00a0multilateral diplomacy.<\/p>\n

The PGA affirmed that there is a unique opportunity to address the question of mistrust in international institutions and other international actors by producing more efficiency and more transparency. Ms. Espinosa says that to tackle violence, the world needs more diplomacy and more dialogue, and that to effectively respond to unilateralism, the world needs more solidarity and more collective action.<\/p>\n

The meeting will be concluded at 6 pm. today. There are 73 speakers inscribed to take the podium.<\/p>\n

Later today she will receive in her office the Foreign Minister of Iran, H.E. Mohammad Javad Zarif. This afternoon, the PGA will meet the Commissioner of the European Union for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Ms. Vera Jourova, before she presides over the closing segment of the High-Level Meeting on Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.<\/p>\n
