IN NIGERIA, PGA DISCUSSES\u00a0MULTILATERALISM AND GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRIORITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n
The President of the General Assembly is in Abuja, Nigeria, where she met the President of the country, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, the Foreign Minister, H.E. Geoffrey Onyeama, and other members of the cabinet.<\/p>\n
The PGA commended Nigeria\u2019s global and regional leadership in pursuit of peace and stability, and the country\u2019s role in support of multilateralism.<\/p>\n
Ms. Espinosa also visited the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development under the leadership of H.E. Ms. Aisha Abubakar. She took part in an interactive discussion on\u00a0\u201cThe Role of Women and Girls in the Promotion of Multilateralism\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa said that;\u00a0\u201cthere is no way we will achieve our vision of a safer, fairer and more sustainable world without the full participation and leadership of women and girls.\u201d<\/p>\n
She stressed that although this \u201cmight seem an obvious thing to point out, we need to say it over and over again. Because clearly, we are still a long way off from achieving gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment.\u201d<\/p>\n
The PGA is in Nigeria to strengthen the ties between the country and the United Nations and to discuss\u00a0the\u00a0priorities of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n
She is meeting also with representatives of civil society, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Country Team in Nigeria and youth to listen to their views on how the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ can be even more relevant to all people.<\/p>\n
During\u00a0her\u00a0visit to Abuja, Ms. Espinosa is speaking to students at the University of Abuja on\u00a0\u201cResponding to Global Challenges in a fast-changing World: the Case for Strengthening Multilateralism.\u201d<\/p>\n
She\u00a0said\u00a0that by 2030 half of the world\u00b4s population will be under 30 years old. And 42% of these young people will be African citizens.<\/p>\n
Before departing from Abuja, Ms. Espinosa will grant interviews to national and international media outlets.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow, 8 May, the PGA will leave Abuja to Accra, Ghana, her last stop in this official travel to Africa.<\/p>\n
