\u00a0<\/strong>PGA MARKS 50th<\/sup>\u00a0ANNIVERSARY OF THE VIENNA CONVENTION ON THE LAW OF TREATIES<\/strong><\/p>\n
This morning,\u00a0President Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa took part in a ceremony to mark the 50th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. In 1969, the Convention opened for signature.<\/p>\n
In her remarks, Ms. Espinosa said that the document is a cornerstone of multilateralism, and an essential framework for the rules-based international order and provides\u00a0Member States with tools for the peaceful settlement of disputes.<\/p>\n
The PGA\u00a0observed\u00a0that whilst the world is witnessing the rise of extremist ideologies and becoming more polarized, long-established international laws and multilateral practices are being devalued by increasing\u00a0acts of unilateralism.<\/p>\n
Ms. Espinosa believes that the 50th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties is also an opportunity to strengthen our rules-based international order and to restore respect for international obligations and compliance with multilateral treaties.<\/p>\n
The event at the Trusteeship Council is being attended by government lawyers, academics and diplomats as well as students of law.<\/p>\n
The ceremony is being co-organised by the Missions of Canada and Colombia to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/p>\n

CONCERT AGAINST PLASTIC POLLUTION WILL TAKE PLACE ON 1 JÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵE IN ANTIGUA<\/strong><\/p>\n
Ms. Espinosa has sent a letter to Member States informing them about the\u00a0\u2018Play it Out\u2019 Concert to beat plastic pollution, which will take place in Antigua on 1 June.<\/p>\n
The event is part of the PGA\u2019s global campaign against plastic pollution and single-use plastics.<\/p>\n
The concert is the result of a partnership between Ms. Espinosa\u2019s Office with the Governments of Antigua and Barbuda and Norway. Additional support is being provided by the Government of Qatar, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Environment, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOPS, the Krim Group\u00a0and\u00a0Lonely Whale, among others.<\/p>\n
The campaign has two key objectives: to\u00a0raise awareness globally; and to introduce changes within the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters\u00a0so that we:\u00a0\u2018walk the talk\u2019.<\/p>\n
The PGA believes that plastic pollution must be tackled from all angles \u2013 through clean-up campaigns, but also through more sustainable consumption and production in order to reduce the amount of plastics that are ending up in our oceans, in rivers, mountains, in wildlife, and finally in human bodies.<\/p>\n
The \u2018Play it Out\u2019 concert is co-headlined by US Grammy winning artist and actress, Ashanti.<\/p>\n
