{"id":194814,"date":"2019-06-07T14:12:22","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T18:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/?p=194814"},"modified":"2019-06-07T14:12:22","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T18:12:22","slug":"press-briefing-by-spokesperson-7-june-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/2019\/06\/07\/press-briefing-by-spokesperson-7-june-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Briefing by Spokesperson \u2013 7 June 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>PRESS BRIEFING BY MONICA GRAYLEY,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR <\/strong><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY <\/strong><strong>PRESIDENT MAR\u00cdA FERNANDA ESPINOSA<\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"post-meta vcard\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"updated\">7 June 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>[As delivered]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em>Good afternoon, everyone!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA ELECTS FIVE NON-PERMANENT MEMBERS TO THE SECURITY COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵCIL\u00a0FOR 2020-2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly has elected five non-permanent members to the Security Council, earlier today.<\/p>\n<p>There were seven candidates running for five seats: Viet Nam for the Asia-Pacific Group, Niger and Tunisia for the African Group, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and El Salvador for the Latin American and the Caribbean Group, Estonia and Romania for the Eastern European Group.<\/p>\n<p>The result of the secret ballot is as follows: Viet Nam received 192 votes, Niger: 191, Tunisia: 191, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: 185 votes, and Estonia: 132 votes.<\/p>\n<p>The election went on a second round for the seat of the Eastern European Group contested by Estonia and Romania.<\/p>\n<p>All five non-permanent members of the Security Council will start their mandate on 1 January 2020 for a period of two years.<\/p>\n<p>They will replace C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Equatorial-Guinea, Kuwait, Peru and Poland whose mandates expire on 31 December 2019.<\/p>\n<p>More information on our website:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\">www.un.org\/pga\/73<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>PGA TO TRAVEL TO GENEVA TO TAKE PART IN INTERNATIONAL LABOUR CONFERENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Espinosa will be travelling to Geneva, Switzerland, to take part in the 108<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0International Labour Conference.<\/p>\n<p>The PGA will deliver opening remarks at the event, which starts on Monday, and aims to find solutions to the challenges related to the future of work.<\/p>\n<p>The session is also celebrating the centenary of the International Labour Organization (ILO).<\/p>\n<p>Whilst in Geneva, Ms. Espinosa will hold bilateral meetings with Heads of State and Government and will take part in the official luncheon hosted by the Director-General of ILO, Mr. Guy Ryder.<\/p>\n<p>She will also grant interviews to international media outlets before heading back to New York on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Her delegation includes a political adviser, a communication specialist and her personal assistant. All travel costs are being covered by the PGA\u2019s Office Trust Fund.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>MS. ESPINOSA PRAISES SCHOOLCHILDREN WHO RAISED MONEY FOR THE VICTIMS OF CYCLONE IDAI IN MOZAMBIQUE <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The PGA has today written a thank you letter to the Primary School children of St. Mary\u2019s School, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, on the island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>She praised them \u2018for their great work in raising 889.45 British Pounds for the victims on Cyclone Idai in Mozambique\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Espinosa has also sent her best wishes to the headmaster and staff of St. Mary\u2019s School and to all people on the island. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tristan da Cunha is one of the most isolated islands in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is all from us.
