I will begin with a travel announcement.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

PGA TO START OFFICIAL VISIT TO CHINA ON MONDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly will travel tomorrow evening to pay an official visit to the Peoples\u2019 Republic of China.<\/p>\n

Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa will be received by the Prime-Minister, H.E. Mr. Li Keqiang, and the Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Wang Yi.<\/p>\n

The PGA\u2019s meeting with Chinese authorities will focus on\u00a0cooperation with the United Nations, implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and her working agenda\u00a0on the seven priorities for the current session.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday 18 June, Ms. Espinosa is expected to hold an interactive dialogue with the academic community and meet with representatives of the\u00a0China Disabled Persons\u2019 Federation.<\/p>\n

The PGA\u2019s delegation will include a political adviser, a communications specialist and a personal assistant. All travel costs\u00a0will be\u00a0covered by the Government of China.<\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly will return to New York on 20 June.<\/p>\n

GA HOLDS ELECTION FOR NEW 18 ECOSOC MEMBERS\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The General Assembly met this morning to elect 18 new members to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). \u00a0At the start of the meeting, Spain was granted a seat following a by-election.<\/p>\n

One of the six main bodies of the United Nations, the ECOSOC is the Organization\u2019s \u201ccentral platform for reflection, debate, and innovative thinking on sustainable development.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benin, Botswana, Republic of the Congo and Gabon contested for the four seats allocated for the African States. The Asia-Pacific States had also four seats available. Bangladesh, China, Republic of Korea and Thailand presented themselves as candidates for this region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Latvia, Montenegro and Russian Federation were candidates for the Eastern European States with three seats in total.\u00a0 Latin American and the Caribbean also had three seats with Colombia, Nicaragua and Panama as candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Finally, Western European and Other States were allocated four seats with Australia, Finland, Norway and Switzerland running as candidates.<\/p>\n

Update: Following a vote by the General Assembly, all 18 candidates were elected for a period of three years.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

PGA\u2019S AGENDA\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This morning the PGA started her day by presiding over the plenary election of members of ECOSOC.\u00a0 She later met\u00a0with the Foreign Minister of Thailand in her office and\u00a0then held separate bilateral meetings with Human Rights Special Rapporteurs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This afternoon, Ms. Espinosa will discuss details of the high-level week with representatives of ECOSOC and the Deputy Secretary-General.\u00a0<\/p>\n

PGA will also meet the Permanent Representatives of the G-4 which includes Brazil, Germany, India and Japan, before attending\u00a0reception to mark the anniversary of the Independence of the Philippines.<\/p>\n
