GA HEARS BRIEFING BY WORKING GROUP\u00a0ESTABLISHED\u00a0BY RESOLUTION 72\/77 ENTITLED \u2018TOWARDS A GLOBAL PACT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

The General Assembly is holding an informal briefing by the co-chairs\u00a0of the ad-hoc open-ended working group, established pursuant to GA resolution 72\/277 entitled \u201cTowards a Global Pact for the Environment\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a letter, the co-chairs, H.E. Mr. Francisco Duarte Lopes, Ambassador of Portugal, and the Permanent Representative of Lebanon, H.E. Amal Mudallalli, informed Member States\u00a0that the working group had completed its mandate by agreeing on concrete recommendations to the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

The co-facilitators also thanked Member States, specialised agencies, and non-governmental organizations for their cooperation, constructive engagement and support.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The recommendations on which Member States are being briefed today include reaffirming the role of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Environment and a proposal for an intergovernmental process\u00a0towards a political declaration, to be considered at the fifth Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Environment Assembly, in Nairobi, Kenya, which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Stockholm Declaration in 2022.<\/p>\n

In her address this morning, the President of the General Assembly, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa, congratulated the\u00a0co-facilitators for their work and for delivering \u00a0on time. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The PGA praised \u201ctheir skillful stewardship of this complex process over three substantive sessions.\u201d She also thanked Member States and the Secretariat for their cooperation.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa said that the General Assembly now has a set of actionable recommendations \u2013 set out in a report available in the six official Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ languages \u2013 with regards to multilateral environmental frameworks and international environmental law, \u00a0which will ensure that we are on track to realize our shared ambitions.<\/p>\n

PGA\u2019S AGENDA:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The PGA started her day by meeting the Permanent Representatives of Canada and Ghana, H.E. Mr. Marc-Andr\u00e9 Blanchard and H.E. Ms. Martha Pobee, the co-facilitators on the modalities for the High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development. \u00a0The High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development will take place on 26 September in New York.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa also took part in the briefing on the outcome of the ad-hoc open-ended working group, established pursuant to GA resolution 72\/277 entitled \u201cTowards a Global Pact for the Environment\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0As we speak, she is meeting with the\u00a0Assistant Secretary-General of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Development Coordination Office, Mr. Robert Piper, and will hold separate bilateral meetings with the Executive Secretary of ECLAC, Ms. Alicia B\u00e1rcena, and H.E. Ambassador Olof Skoog.<\/p>\n
