GA TO HOST HIGH-LEVEL PANEL DISCUSSION BY GENDER EQUALITY LEADERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The General Assembly will on Monday, 15 July,\u00a0hold an\u00a0informal plenary meeting on Gender Equality and Women\u2019s Leadership for a Sustainable World.\u00a0The General Assembly will host the eminent Group of Gender Equity Leaders established by the PGA, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa, last year as one of her top priorities to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.<\/p>\n

The event, which will start at 10 a.m. at the ECOSOC Chamber, will be the\u00a0second meeting of the Group of Gender Equality Leaders.<\/p>\n

The PGA believes that women decision-makers must lead by\u00a0example to safeguard the achievements and accelerate progress towards gender equality for all women and girls.<\/p>\n

The informal plenary meeting will bring together this diverse group of leaders who share a common goal: to accelerate the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women in their own communities and around the world.<\/p>\n

In line with the theme of this year\u2019s High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, the event will focus on empowerment, equality and inclusion as critical elements to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

The event will also provide a platform to follow up on the President of the General Assembly high-level event on \u2018Women in Power\u2019, held on 12 March 2019, and will aim to identify best practices to implement the key action points included in the \u2018Call for Action\u2019, released during the event.<\/p>\n

The PGA, the PGA-elect, H.E, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande and the Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed will deliver opening remarks followed by two panel discussions on Women\u2019s Leadership, a Call to Action and Gender Equality and Inclusive Societies for Sustainable Development. Among the participants are Ms. Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Head of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Secretary-General of the Ibero-American Organization, Ms. Rebecca Grynspan and Mr. Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organization, ILO.<\/p>\n

Both panels will be moderated by the Permanent Representatives of Switzerland, H.E. Mr. Juerg Lauber, and of Rwanda, H.E, Ms. Valentine Rugwabiza.<\/p>\n

GENDER EQUALITY CRUCIAL TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, PGA SAYS ON WORLD POPULATION DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa has issued a tweet to mark World Population Day, on this 11 July. The PGA has asked international leaders and peoples around the globe to invest in population issues and to focus on health for all.<\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly affirmed that gender equality is crucial to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Ms. Espinosa said that \u201creproductive health and women\u2019s empowerment go hand-in-hand.<\/p>\n

This year’s World Population Day calls for global attention to the unfinished business of the\u00a01994 International Conference on Population and Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n

PGA\u2019S AGENDA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa will hold a bilateral meeting\u00a0with the Director General of the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), Ms. Irene Khan. Later, the PGA will take part in a reception in honour of the anniversary of the accession to the throne of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.<\/p>\n
