The President of the General Assembly, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa, granted a joint press conference with the Executive Director of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, and the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Ms. Helen Clark.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The press conference took place on the margins of the\u00a0GA\u00a0Informal Meeting on “Gender Equality and Women\u00b4s Leadership for a Sustainable World”.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The event was attended by several members of the Group of Gender Equality Leaders, which was launched by the PGA, last year.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The President of the General Assembly, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa, spoke at the opening of the Informal Meeting on “Gender Equality and Women\u00b4s Leadership for a Sustainable World” and mentioned the Call for Action document, which was issued during the High-Level Event, “Women in Power”, held on 12 March.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The Call for Action has\u00a0received new signatures earlier today.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The Group of Gender Equality Leaders was launched\u00a0by Ms. Espinosa to benefit from\u00a0the expertise of eminent leaders in the private and public spheres who share the common goal of accelerating gender equality around the world.\u00a0<\/div>\n

We as Leaders Gathered at the United Nations:<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Because:<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
There shall be no greater leap for humanity than achieving real equality for women and the true recognition of their potential, value and strength;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Women\u2019s leadership is needed more urgently than ever to address global challenges from climate change to arms race to rising inequality;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The empowerment of women is about equal rights and equal opportunity in education, career and personal life choices;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
As the world becomes more divided, women\u2019s voice against conflict, stereotypes and discrimination will have to be louder than ever;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The progress achieved over the past decade in the participation of women in politics has been reversed and we are far from accomplishing the goal agreed in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to ensure women\u2019s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision making,<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
As leaders, women and men, we can influence a positive change:<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
We call on all leaders to the following eight action points for women\u2019s participation in power:<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
1. Lead by example by mentoring young women to strengthen their capacity to participate in politics;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
2. Identify and work with champions all over the world to push for national actions required to empower women and give the opportunity to participate as leaders in politics;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
3. Create synergies and strengthen the networks that encourage women to participate in politics and support the sharing of knowledge and experience;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
4. Promote legal frameworks including laws and policies to ensure the full participation of women in politics without discrimination;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
5. Develop specific measures to address violence against women in politics in all its forms and manifestations;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
6. Adopt policies that ensure women\u2019s equal participation in the economy and in society at large, including shared parental leave, and access to quality child care as investments that create a better future for all of us;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
7. Give priority to girls\u2019 education and the economic empowerment of women as key ingredients for women to achieve their full potential;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
8. Create an environment where gender equality is respected, and inclusion is part of the organizational culture in all spheres of society;<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
More than ever we need to join forces, to act fast and to act now, for the benefit of all humanity,<\/div>\n
