PGA SPEAKS AT VALDAI DISCUSSION CLUB, IN MOSCOW;<\/strong><\/p>\n

IN TALK TO MODEL Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ STUDENTS, MS. ESPINOSA HIGHLIGHTS CRUCIAL ROLE OF YOUTH\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly has spoken at the Valdai Discussion Club, in Moscow, earlier today.<\/p>\n

The event was attended by diplomats, thinkers, policy-makers and journalists.<\/p>\n

Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa talked about\u00a0the\u00a0challenges to multilateralism, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ reform, and the Security Council.<\/p>\n

The PGA mentioned the example of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on the Security Council when saying that: \u201cThe success of that process is essential for the credibility and legitimacy of the Security Council in the coming years.\u201d<\/p>\n

The GA leader also stressed the need for partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for engaging stakeholders in the work of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. She outlined some examples of her\u00a0work as\u00a0President which\u00a0has created\u00a0space for them.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa highlighted the importance of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ being closer to the people it serves and listening to their aspirations.<\/p>\n

After her visit to the Valdai Discussion Club, Ms. Espinosa granted interviews to media outlets and moved on to meet students of the Model Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in Russia at the\u00a0Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).<\/p>\n

She discussed one of her priorities;\u00a0\u201cYouth, Peace and Security\u201d and highlighted the crucial and positive role, which young people play in decision-making processes.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa spoke about the importance\u00a0of increasing\u00a0youth engagement in local and national politics. She noted that, at present, less than six percent of parliamentarians are under the age of 35.<\/p>\n

The PGA added that she has worked to ensure that GA meetings include the participation of youth.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa listened to young students in Russia about pressing global issues such as: sustainable development, migration, peace and security, economic growth and universal health coverage, among others.<\/p>\n

Following her meeting, the PGA said that she felt inspired by the knowledge the students displayed on the crucial role of multilateralism, the\u00a0work of the\u00a0Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and the need to\u00a0make\u00a0the Organization more relevant to all.<\/p>\n

The GA leader took part in a luncheon hosted by the MGIMO University Rector, Mr. Anatoly Turknov and concluded her day with a visit to the Victory Museum, in Moscow.<\/p>\n

PGA\u2019S OFFICE<\/strong> TO LAÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵCH SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN ON SDG SUMMIT<\/strong><\/p>\n

The PGA has written to Member States informing that her Office will begin an \u201cSDG Acceleration Hub\u201d social media campaign three weeks in advance of the Sustainable Development Goals Summit.<\/p>\n

The objective is to promote the event and further encourage engagement and participation.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa has invited delegations to participate in the campaign by sharing brief quotes from Heads of State and Government expressing their views on the SDG Summit, as well as previewing any significant voluntary acceleration commitments or initiatives that are being undertaken.<\/p>\n

The tweets will be posted on the PGA\u2019s Twitter account and will be also shared by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Global Goals Twitter account as well as other platforms.<\/p>\n

The SDG Summit will take place on 25 September, in New York.<\/p>\n
