PGA JOINS PRESIDENT OF BOLIVIA IN GENDER-EQUALITY MARCH, IN LA PAZ, TO TACKLE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly will conclude her official visit to Bolivia this evening\u00a0joining\u00a0a march to promote gender-equality in La Paz.<\/p>\n

Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa will deliver remarks at the conclusion of the march to tackle violence against women and feminicide. She will be accompanied at the event, at La Paz central square, Plaza Murillo, by the country\u2019s President, H.E. Mr. Evo Morales.<\/p>\n

The PGA will later take part in a state dinner offered by President Morales in her honour.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa is visiting Bolivia at the invitation of the Government. At her arrival, she was received by the country\u2019s Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Diego Pary Rodr\u00edguez,\u00a0whom she commended for his firm defense of the indigenous peoples and of multilateralism.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She also met Bolivia\u2019s Vice-President, H.E. Mr. \u00c1lvaro Garc\u00eda Linera. Both leaders discussed the crucial role women play in decision-making processes and in building a better world.<\/p>\n

The PGA spoke to students on current global challenges and the 2030 Agenda at\u00a0<\/strong>University Cat\u00f3lica Boliviana, where she also met members of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Country Team.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa and her delegation will return to New York tomorrow, 10 August.<\/p>\n

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES: MS. ESPINOSA HIGHLIGHTS CRUCIAL ROLE OF INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly is spending the International Day of Indigenous Peoples in Bolivia.<\/p>\n

Before leaving on her official trip, Ms. Espinosa recorded a video message to mark the International Day, which was delivered this morning at the commemorative event in the ECOSOC Chamber.<\/p>\n

The PGA highlighted that this year, the International Day coincides with the International Year of Indigenous Languages.<\/p>\n

She stressed that languages are not only means of communications but also unique ways of experiencing and understanding the world, to assert one\u2019s identity\u00a0and sense of belonging as well as\u00a0providing\u00a0channels to pass on culture, history, values and the connection\u00a0that\u00a0indigenous peoples have with nature.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa said that indigenous languages must be protected, and\u00a0their\u00a0usage must be promoted.<\/p>\n

There are currently 7000 languages in the world and approximately 4000 of them are spoken by indigenous people.\u00a0<\/p>\n

About four out of 10 indigenous languages are under risk of disappearing.<\/p>\n

For the GA leader, the survival of indigenous people is interlinked with the survival of their own languages.<\/p>\n

In her message, the PGA also mentioned other challenges still being faced by indigenous peoples such as poverty, exclusion, lack of access to land, racism, discrimination and the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n
