First Committee:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the 74th<\/sup>\u00a0session of the General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande spoke today to the Disarmament and International Security Committee (The First Committee).<\/p>\n

In his remarks he said that Disarmament and international security underpin the priorities for this Session, which are poverty eradication and zero hunger; quality education; climate action and inclusion.<\/p>\n

He added \u201cWe cannot make progress in these areas or Agenda 2030 (for sustainable development), if we live in an insecure world, at the same time poverty, lack of education, climate change and inequalities fuel unrest and instability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sixth Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n

And in his speech to the Sixth Committee (The Legal Committee) Mr. Muhammad-Bande said that \u201cPromotion of justice and international law has always been of fundamental importance to the work of the General Assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cAs we approach the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of the United Nations, we must recommit to the ideals of its founders and recall that we are\u00a0nations united.<\/em>\u00a0A rules-based international order is the best guarantor for the realisation of peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.\u201d End of quote.<\/p>\n

International day of Older Persons<\/strong><\/p>\n

Later today, the President of the General Assembly will be participating in an event on the International Day of Older Persons.<\/p>\n

Mr. Muhammad-Bande will say that that this International day offers a moment to reflect upon the role of older persons as active contributors to society and not merely as passive recipients of care and assistance. He will add that \u201cInclusion is a foundational priority for the Seventy-Fourth Session of the General Assembly, and \u201cWe will not have a Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ that excludes.\u201d<\/p>\n
