Security Sector Reform<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today<\/span>\u00a0at 3<\/span>\u00a0in Conference room 8,<\/span>\u00a0the President of the General Assembly\u00a0<\/span>Tijjani<\/span>\u00a0Muhammad-<\/span>Bande<\/span>\u00a0will participate in\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>High-Level<\/span>\u00a0Panel and Roundtable Discussion on Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and Security Sector Reform<\/span>\u00a0(SSR).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The PGA will stress that\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>primary goal of (SSR) is to ensure the provision of effective security to both the state and its people, within a framework of accountability, democratic governance and the rule of law.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steering Committee on Accessibility<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday at 3 PM the PGA\u00a0<\/span>participated in the inaugural meeting<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the Steering Committee on Accessibility at the United Nations<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He stressed that p<\/span>romotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities are at the core of the priorities of the 74<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0Session of the General Assembly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said that a<\/span>ccessibility is essential to empowerment, inclusion and equality<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>is key to enable persons with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in all aspects of life, according to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said that i<\/span>t is encouraging<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to hear delegates with disabilities share their experiences of improved accessible seating arrangements during the main session of the 74<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0Session of the General Assembly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AU Summit<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The PGA will be travelling to\u00a0<\/span>Addis Ababa on February 7<\/span>\u00a0to attend the African Union Summit. While there he will participate in several events about important\u00a0<\/span>issues<\/span>\u00a0in the continent.<\/span>\u00a0He<\/span>\u00a0will meet officials<\/span>, th<\/span>e Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Team<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0visit<\/span>\u00a0civi<\/span>l society<\/span>\u00a0projects<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cost of the trip will be covered by the Trust Fund of the office of the President of the General Assembly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Black History Month<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tomorrow Friday January 30 at 2 PM, the PGA will kick off the Black History Month Tours in front of the\u00a0<\/span>Ark of Return Memorial<\/span>\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ<\/span>\u00a0Visitors Plaza<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>hono<\/span>u<\/span>r<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>victims<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>slavery<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>transatlantic<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>slave<\/span>\u00a0trade<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The PGA will interact with a group of school children about\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>contributions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>people<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0African\u00a0<\/span>descent<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>work<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0U<\/span>N\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>fields<\/span>\u00a0such\u00a0<\/span>as<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>peace<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>security<\/span>\u00a0and human\u00a0<\/span>rights<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>special<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>emphasis<\/span>\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span>decolonization<\/span>.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joint Briefing<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This week\u00a0<\/span>in a joint briefing to Member States by the Presidents of the General Assembly and the Econ<\/span>omic and Social Council (ECOSOC) The PGA said that the two bodies\u00a0<\/span>share<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>several<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mandated<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>processes<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>areas<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>work<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>demand<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>close<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>collaboration<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>partnership<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>namely<\/span>: Financing\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0Development; Youth;\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>preparation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a05<\/span>th<\/span>\u202fConference on\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0Least\u00a0<\/span>Developed<\/span>\u00a0Countries<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>others<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The PGA\u00a0<\/span>mentioned<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a02030 Agenda\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0a plan\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>better<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>world<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>its<\/span>\u00a0i<\/span>mplementation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>requires<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>action<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>sufficient<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>financing<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The lack\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>financial<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>integrity<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>cross-border<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>problem<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>requires<\/span>\u00a0inclusive multilateral\u00a0<\/span>action<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He and\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0ECOSOC\u00a0<\/span>President<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ambassader<\/span>\u00a0Mona\u00a0<\/span>Jull<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>announced<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>establish<\/span>ment<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0a high-level\u00a0<\/span>panel<\/span>\u00a0on international\u00a0<\/span>financial<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>accountability<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>transparency<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>integrity<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The High Level\u00a0<\/span>panel<\/span>\u00a0will\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>appointed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0due\u00a0<\/span>consideration<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0regional and\u00a0<\/span>gender<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>balance<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It<\/span>\u00a0will\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>co-chaired<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>by<\/span>\u00a0Her\u00a0<\/span>Excellency<\/span>\u00a0Helle Thorning-Schmidt,\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>former<\/span>\u00a0Prime Minister\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Denmark<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>former<\/span>\u00a0Prime Minister\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0Niger, His\u00a0<\/span>Excellency<\/span>\u00a0Ibrahim\u00a0<\/span>Mayaki<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Holocaust Victims Remembrance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he PGA <\/span>participated in<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Holocaust Memorial\u00a0<\/span>Ceremony this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>we are privileged to listen to<\/span>\u00a0Holocaust survivors<\/span>\u00a0Ms. Irene\u00a0<\/span>Shashar<\/span>\u00a0and Mr. Shraga Milstein, who overcame the severest form of\u00a0<\/span>persecution.Their<\/span>\u00a0reminiscences\u00a0<\/span>energise<\/span>\u00a0our collective consciousness for a more inclusive, peaceful and harmonious global community that encourages unity in diversity.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
