Fiji<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nT<\/span>he President of the 74<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0session of the General Assembly<\/span>\u00a0Tijjani Muhammad-Bande\u00a0is in Fiji<\/span>. He met with\u00a0<\/span>High-Level Officials including the\u00a0<\/span>President of the Republic of Fiji<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe PGA visited\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF-supported\u00a0<\/span>Fiji\u00a0<\/span>School for the Blind<\/span>\u00a0where he took part<\/span>, with the children\u2019s help,\u00a0<\/span>in a fire drill and a special hand washing ex<\/span>er<\/span>cise.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nHe said that he\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>so inspired by\u00a0<\/span>the young people at the school<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0added \u201c<\/span>while life may not always be easy, you have shown that determination\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0a great attitude conquer all<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAs 75-90% of all vendors across the Pacific are women, the PGA visited the Markets for Change\u00a0<\/span>project. He described\u00a0<\/span>the project<\/span>\u00a0as a great example of a high impact partnership between vendors<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>local government, the Fijian Government, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women and development partners to change women\u2019s lives for the better.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe President also<\/span>\u00a0had\u00a0<\/span>a dialogue with youth<\/span>\u00a0at the<\/span>\u00a0University of the South Pacific<\/span>. The dialogue\u00a0<\/span>tie<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0into the biggest-ever global conversation on the world\u2019s future to mark\u202fthe Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s\u202f75th anniversary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nInternational\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Women\u2019s Day<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBecause the PGA<\/span>\u2019s official trip\u00a0<\/span>he couldn\u2019t attend the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u00a0<\/span>Observance of<\/span>\u00a0
<\/span>International Women\u2019s Day<\/span>, but he recorded a video message\u00a0<\/span>for the occasion.\u00a0<\/span>In\u00a0<\/span>it he<\/span>\u00a0call<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0on everyone, everywhere to uphold gender equality as a necessity in\u00a0<\/span>promoting<\/span>\u00a0human rights.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nMr. Muhammad-Bande<\/span>\u00a0added that despite\u00a0<\/span>important gains since\u00a0<\/span>the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>no country can claim to have achieved gender equality, especially in terms of income and political leadership.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nHe said that\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Change has been slow for most women and girls in the world. We have much work to do.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAs we celebrate ten years of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women,\u00a0<\/span>the Pres<\/span>ident of the General Assembly<\/span>\u00a0call<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span>everyone<\/span>\u00a0to support the intergenerational campaign, \u2018Generation Equality\u2019 to guarantee that equality becomes a lived experience for everyone, regardless of gender.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBy working together- girls and boys, women and men- we can galvanize multilateral action to\u00a0realise\u00a0human rights of all women and girls.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe<\/span>\u00a0text and video of the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>message are available on the PGA\u2019s website\u00a0<\/span>un.org<\/span>\/pga\/74 and the observance day\u00a0<\/span>website as well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nCSW<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOn Monday<\/span>\u00a09<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0of March<\/span>, the PGA will participate in the\u00a0<\/span>64<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0session of the Commission on the Status of Women.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nHe is expected to say \u201c<\/span>As we begin this Decade of Action and Delivery to\u00a0<\/span>implement the Sustainable Development Goals<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0it is critical that we mainstream gender equality across all of our work if we are to achieve any of the SDGs.
