Press Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am happy to let you know that the President of the General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande will hold a virtual press conference on Monday 8 June to talk to you about the latest regarding the work of the General Assembly, the new ways to enable the GA to carry out its essential tasks and upcoming important meetings and to answer all your questions.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m told that the link to participate in the press conference and to ask questions will be the same as the noon briefings\u2019 links.<\/p>\n

The press conference will be streamed live on webtv.un.org and their social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.<\/p>\n

Environment Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his message<\/a> on World Environment Day, the President of the General Assembly said: \u201cIt\u2019s time for nature. <\/em>Although key events were postponed in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical that we maintain momentum towards a green and sustainable future that allows us to live in harmony with nature for present and future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Muhammad-Bande added that blue and green investments over the next decade can unlock 100 million new jobs. \u201cWe can no longer view environmental action as being at odds with the development agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elections<\/strong><\/p>\n

I shared this information with you earlier in the week, but it\u2019s worth noting again that the President Mr. Muhammad-Bande announced that the elections of non-permanent members of the Security Council, members of the Economic and Social Council, and the President of the 75th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly, will be held on 17 June.<\/p>\n

Five working days prior to the elections, the President will inform Member States of the specific time slot to each voter to cast their ballot in the General Assembly Hall, in adherence to social distancing guidelines.<\/p>\n

The casting of the ballots in the designated venue will be streamed live on webcast. The President will oversee the proceedings in the General Assembly Hall and the tellers will also be observing the whole process.<\/p>\n

The office, in collaboration with the Department of General Assembly and Conference Management Affairs (DGACM), will be holding a webinar for Member States to provide details on the voting process.<\/p>\n

I would like to add here that there will arrangements made to limit the number of persons present in the GA Hall, to ensure everyone\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n

Omnibus Resolution<\/strong><\/p>\n

This morning, the President transmitted to Member States, a letter from the co-coordinators for the General Assembly on COVID-19-related initiatives, the Permanent Representatives of Afghanistan and Croatia to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/p>\n

Their letter conveys the zero draft for the proposed GA omnibus resolution on the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

The co-coordinators also invited Member States to a virtual town hall meeting on Friday, 12 June, at 10:00 a.m. for discussions.<\/p>\n

Human Rights<\/strong><\/p>\n

This week the PGA spoke at the Review of the United Nations Human Rights Treaty Body System. He said that human rights are the foundation for peace and prosperity.<\/p>\n

The President added that there is nothing more urgent than ensuring that all human beings, no matter their beliefs, gender, economic condition, or other status, are able to live in dignity, with justice and peace.<\/p>\n

Ocean Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

Next week the PGA will be participating in several events on Ocean.<\/p>\n

In his message on World Ocean Day that is coming up on June 8, he said that \u201clife under water is essential <\/em>to life on land. We must harness the potential of blue and green economies.\u201d He called on Member States to commit to protecting 30% of our blue planet by 2030.<\/p>\n

Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Thursday, 11 June the PGA will convene a virtual High-level Thematic Debate on The Impact of Rapid Technological Change on the Sustainable Development Goals and Targets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n

It will also provide an opportunity to highlight the efforts made by Member States, the United Nations system, other multilateral institutions, the private sector and stakeholders to achieve Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, while considering the impact of rapid technological changes, such as artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
