United Nations Headquarters, New York,\u00a0<\/strong>15 May 2020 – <\/span>The President of the United Nations General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, today, circulated a letter to Member States with the names of candidates for the elections of the President of the 75th<\/sup> session of the Assembly, non-permanent members of the Security Council and members of the Economic and Social Council.<\/p>\n

The elections will be held simultaneously, on 17 June 2020, from 9:00 a.m. in the General Assembly Hall in accordance with decision 74\/755 of 29 May 2020, entitled, \u201cProcedure for holding elections by secret ballot without a plenary meeting during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Muhammad-Bande said that \u201csince the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have all had to work under extraordinary conditions to overcome the myriad of challenges facing us. Indeed, the forthcoming elections represent our common commitment to ensuring the uninterrupted continuation of the important work of the United Nations, in accordance with the values and principles of the United Nations Charter.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President urged all voters to adhere to the guidelines contained in his letter of 2 June 2020<\/a>, including not to congregate and to maintain the recommended physical distancing, and to have a face covering on the day of the elections.<\/p>\n

The names of the candidates that were communicated to the Secretariat at least 48 hours prior to the election are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Election of the President of the General Assembly at its seventy-fifth session <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    – For the one vacant seat from among the Western European and other States, one endorsed candidate has been communicated, namely, His Excellency Mr. Volkan Bozkir of Turkey.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Election of non-permanent members of the Security Council <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      – For the two vacant seats from among the African and Asia-Pacific States, three candidates have been communicated, namely, Djibouti, India and Kenya. Of those three candidates, India and Kenya are endorsed candidates.<\/p>\n

      – For the one vacant seat from among the Latin American and Caribbean States, one endorsed candidate has been communicated, namely, Mexico.<\/p>\n

      \u00a0– For the two vacant seats from among the Western European and other States, three candidates have been communicated, namely, Canada, Ireland and Norway.<\/p>\n

      1. Election of members of the Economic and Social Council<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \u00a0– For the five vacant seats from among the African States, five endorsed candidates have been communicated, namely, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

        – For the three vacant seats from among the Asia-Pacific States, three endorsed candidates have been communicated, namely, Indonesia, Japan and Solomon Islands.<\/p>\n

        – For the one vacant seat from among the Eastern European States, one endorsed candidate has been communicated, namely, Bulgaria.<\/p>\n

        – For the four vacant seats from among the Latin American and Caribbean States, four candidates have been communicated, namely, Argentina, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Guatemala and Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n

        – For the five vacant seats from among the Western European and other States, five candidates have been communicated, namely, Austria, France, Germany, Portugal and United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

        The President of the General Assembly will oversee the proceedings in the General Assembly Hall and the tellers will also be observing the whole process.<\/p>\n

        The representatives of the following States will act as tellers: Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cuba, Egypt, Finland, Malaysia, Netherlands, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, and Ukraine.<\/p>\n
