header_6_text_shadow_vertical_length=&#8221;header_6_text_shadow_style,%91object Object%93&#8243; header_6_text_shadow_blur_strength=&#8221;header_6_text_shadow_style,%91object Object%93&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>PRESIDENT LAUDS NEW POLITICAL DECLARATION ON VACCINE EQUITY, CALLS FOR \u201cVACCINES FOR ALL\u201d TO BECOME A REALITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This morning the President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/75\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/100\/2021\/03\/PGA-letter-The-Political-Declaration-on-Equitable-Global-Access-to-COVID-19-Vaccines.pdf\">convened an informal meeting<\/a> of the plenary on vaccine equity \u2013 at the request of 19 delegations.<\/li>\n<li>These delegations had sought the President\u2019s support in providing a platform to launch a Political Declaration on Equitable Global Access to COVID-19 Vaccines.<\/li>\n<li>That declaration is currently supported by 181 delegations.<\/li>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/75\/2021\/03\/26\/informal-meeting-of-the-plenary-on-the-political-declaration-on-equitable-global-access-to-covid-19-vaccines\/\">remarks to this morning\u2019s meeting<\/a>, the President noted that the special session on COVID-19, which he had convened last December, had provided an opportunity to hear from experts on all issues related to COVID-19 vaccines.<\/li>\n<li>A lot had happened since then. Yet, much more remains to be done, he said.<\/li>\n<li>He added, \u201cWe went into this pandemic together. I believe we can emerge together. But that depends on fair and equitable access to vaccines\u2026 We owe it to all of those we lost and all of those who have fought together to stand as one.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Applauding the 181 countries that came forward with this joint political declaration, he noted that, from the earliest days of his presidency, he had stressed that the world has both a moral and practical obligation to provide vaccines for all.<\/li>\n<li>Highlighting specific commitments outlined in the declaration, the President called for their implementation \u2013 so that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/75\/vaccines4all\/\">vaccines for all<\/a>\u201d could become a reality.<\/li>\n<li>Later in the briefing, on another topic, when a journalist asked, \u201cDoes the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ not mean anything anymore?\u201d, the Spokesperson responded: \u201cIn terms of whether the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ means anything, today, you saw 181 countries come together on their own to push for global, equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, which is a very important expression of political will\u2026 Today was a clear example that, yes, for the Member States, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ definitely means something.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>PRESIDENT TO MEET WITH SECRETARY-GENERAL THIS AFTERNOON<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The President will hold his regular coordination meeting with the Secretary-General today at 1:00 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Expected topics of discussion include: the work of the General Assembly; Syria; Myanmar; Ethiopia; Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Development System reform, including the \u201creinvigorated resident coordinator system\u201d; the Interactive Dialogue on the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, which will be held on 26 April; and the effects of COVID-19 on business continuity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>PRESIDENT TO RECEIVE U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE IN \u201cVIRTUAL VISIT\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The President will meet with United States Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken during the Secretary\u2019s virtual visit to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ next week.<\/li>\n<li>They will meet on Monday afternoon to discuss the United States\u2019 engagement at the United Nations, the importance of multilateralism and areas of mutual interest and concern.<\/li>\n<li>The meeting will open with very brief public remarks, which will be broadcast live at webtv.un.org.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPOKESPERSON ASKED FOR UPDATES ON SECRETARY-GENERAL SELECTION &amp; APPOINTMENT PROCESS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In response to questions on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/75\/sg-selection\/\">Secretary-General selection and appointment process<\/a>, the Spokesperson said that the President had a mandate to convene informal dialogues with candidates. He had therefore set the first dialogue for 7 May. That had been communicated to Member States and then immediately to the press and public. The President had also transparently circulated the current candidate\u2019s vision statement.<\/li>\n<li>Asked if there were any other candidates endorsed by Member States, the Spokesperson said that, if and when any other candidates were presented by Member States, those names would be jointly circulated to Member States by the Presidents of the General Assembly and Security Council and then made public.<\/li>\n<li>Asked why Member States were not presenting candidates for consideration, the Spokesperson said that was a question that should be directed to Member
