The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with the?Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Her Excellency Dr. Naledi Pandor.
Foreign Minister Pandor pledged the continued support of South Africa to the Office of the President of the General Assembly, including the specific priorities identified by the President for the 76th?session.
The President underlined the necessity of achieving vaccine equity by the end of 2022, as the first step to build back better from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Minister supported the call of the PGA and also mentioned the need for TRIPS flexibilities for vaccine production in the developing world.
Both sides also discussed other relevant topics, such as combatting climate change, youth, achieving gender equality and enhancing cooperation with regional organization such as African Union.
The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.?
