PGA meets young leaders, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ officials and authorities to discuss climate action at Expo 2020
Earlier today, the President of the General Assembly, Mr. Abdulla Shahid, delivered opening remarks in an event at the Expo 2020 Dubai to celebrate youth-led action against climate change
Mr. Abdulla Shahid spoke to an audience of young leaders, students, national ministers, current and former Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ officials.
In his speech, the ¡°People¡¯s promise for climate impact: the race to net zero¡±, the PGA said that ¡°nature will not negotiate, and that now is the time to act¡±.
Mr. Shahid commended the role of youth in demanding climate action.
He said that ¡°hope combined with actions and change is a winning formula¡±.
The event was organized by the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the Emirati logistics company DP World.
On 26 October, the PGA will convene a High-Level meeting in New York aimed at raising climate ambition and supporting efforts to arrive at COP26 with ¡°comprehensive, immediate and effective solutions that will ensure that the rise in global temperatures is kept under the 1.5-degree Celsius limit.¡±
The GA President also called on wealthy countries to deliver on their promise to provide US$ 100 billion every year in climate funding for developing countries.
PGA Shahid meets Director-General of IRENA
And since we are talking about climate financing, Mr. Shahid held a bilateral meeting with the Director-General of the The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Mr. Francesco la Camera. The agency has its headquarters in Masdar City in Abu Dhabi.
He also met with the Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director-General of Expo, H.E. Ms. Reem Ebrahim Al-Hashimi.
The GA President later visited other pavilions and met with women advocates for climate action.
Tomorrow PGA Shahid will speak at the Launch of IRENA Financing Facility and later, before delivering remarks at the event on ¡°Reaching the Last Mile Transforming Energy in Small Island Developing States¡±, (SIDS).
Mr. Shahid started his day in Dubai earlier today by granting an interview to the National News.
