The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today virtually with Mr. Marco Lambertini, the Director General of WWF International.

Mr. Lambertini pledged the continued and firm support of WWF to the Office of the President of the General Assembly, in realizing the five rays of hope identified by the President in his vision statement for a Presidency of Hope. In particular he noted the emphasis by the President on climate change, environmental protection, and biodiversity, specifically under the priority area: “responding to the needs of the planet”.

The President commended the work of the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in conservation of nature and environmental protection. He stressed human responses to stop biodiversity decline and save the environment have been woefully inadequate, with targets repeatedly missed. He further highlighted that importance of nature-based solutions that protect the rich tapestry of life on earth, and that allow our oceans, our lands and our forests to thrive. The President welcomed WWF’s involvement in the General Assembly activities.

Both sides also discussed other relevant topics, such as climate change, COP15 on Biodiversity and cooperation in future.
