The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide.
Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu shared insights into the Office on Genocide Prevention and work related to Responsibility to Protect (R2P), Secretary-General’s Action Plan to Prevent Genocide and the Fez Plan of Action on the role of religious leaders in preventing incitement to violence leading to atrocity crimes.
The President underlined the utmost importance of the prevention of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
The President and the Special Adviser also discussed the crucial role of technology and social media companies to limit the reach of inflammatory statements by political actors and false information.
The President accepted the invitation of the Special Adviser to deliver Opening Remarks in this year’s event to commemorate the 73rd Anniversary of the Genocide Convention and the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime under the theme “The voices of youth for a peaceful and inclusive world”
The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
