The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E Mr. Peter Thomson, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Secretary-General¡¯s Special Envoy for the Oceans (and former President of the General Assembly for the 71st?session).
The Special Envoy?pledged his continued support to the priorities of the Office of the President of the General Assembly, especially on responding to the needs of the planet through the attainment of SDG14 to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development and for future generations.
The Special Envoy for the Oceans shared an update on the preparations for the 2022 Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Oceans Conference to be held in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July 2022.
He underscored the importance of addressing the decline of the ocean health because ¡®there is no healthy planet without a healthy ocean.¡¯
The President commended the Special Envoy¡¯s leadership, and advocacy role in mobilizing the necessary international support aiming to conserve and to sustainably use the Ocean¡¯s resources. Both sides also shared their views on other relevant topics, such as climate change, SIDS developments, finance, IUU fishing, biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, harmful fisheries subsidies, marine protected areas, and preparations for other upcoming oceans-related conferences which helps to build momentum towards the 2022 Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Oceans Conference.
The President met the Special Envoy in his office at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
