GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The 11^th Emergency Special Session this morning adopted resolution RES/ES-11/2 entitled ¡°humanitarian consequences of the aggression against Ukraine¡±.

There were 90 co-sponsors.

The resolution was adopted with a yes vote from 140 Member States, five no votes and 38 abstentions.

The General Assembly had agreed in advance that a two-thirds majority of those voting and present would be needed to adopt the resolutions.

The General Assembly then held a procedural vote on a motion to take action on A/ES-11/L.3. The votes were 50 yes, 67 no and 36 abstentions. As a result, no action was taken on resolution draft L.3.

Member States continue now to give statements after adoption

General Assembly Vice-President, Ambassador Jose Blanco, Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic Mission to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ is presiding over the session.

DOHA

Turning to upcoming travels of the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid.

He will undertake an official visit to Doha from 25 to 26 March to take part as a keynote speaker in the opening segment of the 20^th annual Doha Forum. This comes at the invitation of the Government of the State of Qatar.

The President¡¯s address will be on the Doha Forum¡¯s 2022 theme of ¡°Transforming for a New Era.¡±

The address will touch on the increasingly complex global geo-political situation, the growing humanitarian crisis, the need for universal COVID vaccination, financing for sustainable recovery, the importance of bridging the digital divide, managing global migration, and addressing climate change, among other topics.

The visit will also be an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the Office of the President of the General Assembly and the Government.

All costs associated with the visit are generously funded by the Government of the State of Qatar.

QUESTIONS

The Spokesperson was asked if the President of the General Assembly felt everything had gone smoothly (and correctly). The Spokesperson replied that it is up to Member States decide how to proceed in the General Assembly, based on the rules of procedure.

The Spokesperson was asked (off-camera) if Ukraine¡¯s objection triggered the procedural vote on draft L.3. The Spokesperson confirmed (off-camera) that yes, Ukraine triggered the vote.
