The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with Ms. Daniela La Cava, the Mayor of Miami-Dade County of Florida, USA.

The Mayor thanked the President for his leadership on climate action and pledged to support his efforts, including through highlighting how sea-level rise threatens developed and developing countries alike, drawing comparisons between the experience of Miami-Dade County and low-lying Small Island Developing States.

The Mayor also mentioned that more SIDS are located in the Caribbean than anywhere else in the world, and thus it is essential that their neighbors, at the national and subnational levels, step up their support including through sharing best practices and capacity building.

The President extended a warm welcome to the mayor and thanked her for her support to the New Urban Agenda, including participating in the momentum-building?ahead of the General Assembly’s high-level meeting to assess the agenda’s implementation. He congratulated Ms. La Cava for being the first women-mayor ever elected in Miami-Dade’s history. The President stressed that mainstreaming gender equality throughout the 蘑菇视频 was a key concern of his presidency. He also encouraged greater cooperation between cities in SIDS and developing states for knowledge transfer and capacity development.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
